Someone came through the neighborhood last night and tore down all the Kerry-Edwards signs.
By the time I noticed (8AM) there was already an officer in the area, taking reports from several others who had signs taken down. Not much we can do at this point, unless we all want to put up another round of signs, which will probaly be torn down. There will be additional police AND neighborhood watch surveillance in this area tonight though.

That's terrible, Kacy. I guess some people will never get the concept of freedom of expression. If I were you, I'd put my sign back up.

I can't afford to contribute $ for another yard sign, and may have to make one that will stick up on the porch instead of in the lawn... closer to the door and window, where they may be less brazen, less inclined to rip it off.
Thanks for your reply, Denise.
*and now for an update* I just got back from the local Democratic HQ, with a new sign. I won't allow anyone to shut me up so easily. LOL, and I will keep a closer watch on the action around this neighborhood.

They must be Ralph Nader supporters! But whoever they are they are idiots...

LOL, Larry, the only signs left standing for about a mile were Bush signs. In addition, the signs were stolen from the front lawn of the Democrat HQ, which sits visibly on a corner, one of which is the Hwy 99 access route that runs right through town. I've seen only one Nader sign in this whole community, LOL, so I don't think that guess will fly.
Meanwhile? I have another one out front, and three or four other neighbors have replaced theirs as well.

Usually just kids.

Hey -- on the bright side -- they're interested in politics -- on the dark side -- the next Karl Rove could be among them...

LOL, Reb, that's funny.
I thought it was just kids, and that's what the patrolman thinks. But whose kids prowl that much area after midnight and before 6AM? I know, I know...some do, but IMHO, 'kids' shouldn't be running loose in the streets at night anyway.
Last week, a middle school aged boy saw my sign and started screeching BUSH BUSH BUSH YES, then promptly shouted a double edged obscenity and attached it to Kerry's name. *sigh* IF it was that same youngster who took the signs? well, guess you can't expect civility from someone who would steal yard signs. Hope my car doesn't get vandalised again, like it did on July 4th.

(angel friendship hugs) Oh Kacy, I'm sooooo sorry to hear that.

That is vandalism. I certainly don't believe in tearing Bush/Cheney signs from peoples lawns and stickers from bumpers, for I believe in the freedom of speech and everyone's right should be respected.

It reminds me of Noam Chomsky's philosophy that even if something sounds so radical or far-fetched, like saying that no Nazi concentration camps and gas chambers ever existed, that those people should still have the right to speak.

I'm sorry you didn't get to come up to the rally, dearest friend! I understand completely the frustrations you've dealt with today, and no worries, we are already setting up plans for the next major rally after the election.

Sincerely,
Noah Eaton

Noah, I was hoping to see something of the rally on the 6 o'clock news, but maybe, it will show up later, or tomorrow. what was the turnout/event like?
Hope the day was rewarding in many ways, and that you are pleased with the turnout.

Yanno, I was thinking of this, and was trying for the life of me to recall the new footage I saw of just the opposite happening.  Perhaps someone could tell me the locale this occured in, but the Republican candidate for a local position kept having signs stolen, so he set up camp with a video camera.  And who should roll up but his Democratic opponent for the same position, in a pickup truck with the party name and slogan on the side, and what should this person do but gather up all the Republican signs and toss them into the pickup's bed.  Irregardless of party affiliation, there will always be those who abhor competition.

I do feel for you, Midnitesun.  If I saw anyone trying to remove opposition signs, I would definately call them in and try my best to inflict bodily harm with an aluminum baseball bat.  Perhaps my years of bokken practice will pay off.

I suspect the local Republicans recruited a covey of Swift Boat Against Kerry Vets to infiltrate the neighborhood after dark and steal the signs.

One other possible explanation might be that kids have a thing about taking things from people's yards.

One thing you might check is the local police.  At least around here, the police pile up all discarded political yard signs they find behind city hall and you can pick them up.

Most generally, the Republicans think the Democrats are stealing them, and the Democrats think the Republicans are stealing them. Everyone thinks only the signs of their party are being taken.

Very rarely do politicians sneak out in the dead of night in dark clothes and conduct sign raids.  I know I don't because I don't look good in camouflage.

They actually did a survey of the found discarded signs around here last election and found the taking was apolitical.  (I have always suspected closet Nadarites as far as my signs though)

Having had more than a few of my signs taken from yards in my races over the years, I can't say I am too happy about significant amounts of money being lost.
I do not see it as a freedom of speech issue, but rather a cost of having teenagers with too much time on their hands.

Closet Naderites? ROTFL

The new replacement sign is now attached to the inside of my glass/screen door...visible, yet a bit closer to being inside for the night. In California, during a previous election, I had my car windows soaped & egged supposedly for my visible political "attitude" and I never even put up a sign! Go figure.
This is my first experience with a political yard sign, so I was surprised to discover this might just be a regular occurrence during campaigns. LOL, I think I'll go to the McMinnville PD tomorrow, to see what they have stashed behind their 'bushes' LOL.
Welcome to the political arena?

LOL, maybe we should stop ALL the signage?
Make everyone guess who we support?
LOL, I've been registered Independent/No Affiliation for so long I forgot about the 'partying' consequences.

I concur.  It all equates to litter, in my mind, seeing this impromtu vertical trash heap on every corner and every open lot.  And you can see the marked competition of larger signs, larger print, brighter colors, higher gloss.  In my very simple View, the money spent on advertising via placards could be much better spent on paying for those programs the varied parties support/endorse.  Put their own money where their collective mouths are, instead of milking the political cash cow.

A Lakewood Republican stealing campaign signs late one night got nabbed when he ran across a low- hanging driveway chain, fell face first onto a pilfered sign and the concrete and knocked himself unconscious.

Randal Wagner, 50, was loaded into an ambulance, treated at Lutheran Medical Center for abrasions and facial cuts and issued a summons.

Wagner, who unsuccessfully tried to steal a "Dave Thomas" congressional sign that evening, had signs for other Democratic candidates in his Toyota pickup, Wheat Ridge police reported.

"I did a very stupid thing," Wagner said Monday, admitting theft of the signs. "I got caught up in the political passions of this highly contested election."

Wagner said that he and his wife, Jan, who was driving their pickup that night, "want to apologize to the people" they have offended.

"Everybody has a right to express their political opinions," Randal Wagner said.

Jan Wagner, who was not cited, said she did not want to discuss what happened. She also is a Republican.

The incident with the Wagners comes at a time when a record number of Democrats and Republicans are complaining that their signs are disappearing or being vandalized.

Wheat Ridge resident Pete Klammer, whose 911 call last Wednesday eventually led police to the Wagners, said his frustration is that people mistakenly believe only their party is the victim.

This is really funny timing for this one to return, as today was sign-replacement-time again. Yep, the THIRD sign to be stuck into the remains of the literal 'grassroots' of my front yard. LOL, I can put them up almost as fast as they can take them down.
Meanwhile, I await Nov 2.
