Cold sea winds shriek through gaps in the stones. I come to the broken towers-alone. This fortress isle is a wasteland Close to Cardynn’s northern shore. It’s a haven for seabirds, to rest in their flight. I wish it were nothing more. I’m called to ward the circle, To stand guard this Threshold Night. No happy celebration here, No gath’ring in bane-fire light. I’m not some moon-struck, dewy-eyed maid, New to the craft, the vow and the gift. I’ve delivered babes to babes I delivered; As years raced while the days seemed to drift. The villagers whisper they’ve seen me stand And spit in the soul-drinker’s eye. While it’s true I’ve served light since I was a girl, Will I pass this last test, or just die? I stumble, footsore, up uneven stone steps, Clutching my shawl in a grip terror-tight. For regardless of hunger, or fear, or my weakness, War begins when dusk sinks into night. Nan |

The title drew me in, the masterful writing kept me here. Three times I read, three messages I got... I shall read this again, and receive yet more... this, I know... |

Nan darling girl, you know I’m going to say this is good, okay it’s much better than good, okay yes darling girl it’s utterly utterly excellent. You are an absolutely fabulous writer I love the way you’ve constructed this the story is building beautifully, I was carried as is always the case right into heart of the tale you’re telling. More darling heart give me more. And look since you posted this after Krissy has gone home for the night I get to answer before she does. Love and warm stuff As always Mushy To give light to them that sit in darkness..... to guide our feet into the way of peace Luke 2:79 |

Dear Sunshine, Thank you so much for reading this threee times. That's a true compliment. Dear Marsha, Yes, the story just keeps building. I'm getting an inkling of the ending now. We'll just have to see what the day brings. Dear Noah, Thank you for reading this and encouraging me. Dear Startime, I like to have company when I enter these haunted realms, thanks for coming along. (It would be scary in here alone) Dear Floria, I'm not really a poet, but I love to tell a story. This one is shaping up quite nicely, I think. Thank you for your kind words. Nan |

wow - this poem is full of powerful imagery... Wasn't sure if I should read, not having read #1 but I am looking for that now. very rich writing here, with texture and substance of it's own accord. Enjoyed much. Michael |

Dear Michael, Thanks, I'm glad it struck a chord with you. I hope you like the first one too. It's done in a slightly different style(free verse as opposed to rhyme), but I seem to fall naturally into rhyme. Dear Blues, Thank you for your compliment, I revised it quite a few times before posting, I'm glad it worked for you. Nan |
