Listening to every heart

He took me swiftly
like the crow flies

only I became the seagull again in
mid-flight

back over my birthland
reversing over my memories
back through the San Gabriel pass
where wind whips cars
to a breakneck halt

where the highriserocks
held my vision
gullied again

where the pinion trees
moan softly
grasping gravel for drink

where Spanish moss hangs
in my hair and tickles
my back

where the sun beats
summer

and blue skies beg for distance

El Camino Real
sounding more like a song today
than the footpath for
donkeys and
missionaries
leading north to south and back again

yes, he took me swiftly
with much to crow about, in a
seagull sort of way

Great imagery here Karilea!  Thanks for taking me along for the ride.  Love this and now I want to see it for real!  Hugs.

Thank you DS...can't count the number of times I've been on I-5, 101, Rt 1...all memory makers, indeed!  So glad I had the experience when I did, then again, when older...

now?  Everyone else can have it...not the same as I remember...

Enchantress, there's a lot of good ground still to cover in CA...but you've really got to get in the back country to enjoy what is left...so glad I grew up in the 50's and 60's in CA...

thank you both for reading!

Yes, Martie, with the right people, any journey is wonderful...but I can remember sometimes when we had the highway to ourselves at night...and it is just not that way any more...too many diamonds and rubies....

Wonderful imagery Karilea ... I could feel that Spanish moss flowing down and tickling my neck ... a great piece, filled with vivid description, much enjoyed!

Best wishes,
