Needling Thoughts Silence surrounds the seamstress As she seams opening passages Then steams the seams open And carves a curve In linen, wool or silk Fingers dipping in fabric like A cat lapping warm milk Then to relax she lays Her silk-soft fabric aside Takes up her needlepoint And her thoughts flash As the yarn whips and rides In and out, in fevered dash Till embroidered lays A silken sash In candlelight, all pretties done She picks up socks to darn In and out the needle flies As grandpa spins a yarn But in her world, her Silent world, her fingers Used to the knit and purl Around her silent, awesome thoughts Her threading threads around in whirls She is already in tomorrow Her thoughts bypassing Yesterday’s sorrows Her thoughts fly south Then north again Wondering if she’ll see him ~ and where ~ and when Sweethearts’ Day will be here soon And on golden beam of moon She’ll cast a lone lover’s wish Among the breezing leaves that swish A tear falls down porcelain cheek She stitches at a heart in pink On a pillow to catch the tear For she cannot lay aside her fear And with each stitch She says a prayer In hopes her words Are not threadbare “God, save the souls That give their all They’ve gone to war They’ve answered the call Now bring them home Safe, and sound,” And in her stitch Her words are bound For in many ways will lay one’s poetry By written word, or 1863 tapestries. ~*~ 02.11.01 slightest revision 02.17.02 |

Karilea - Poetry captured in a tapestry, nice idea. I liked the subtle reference to the civil war with her thoughts going north and south. As always, very good. Dave |

Was it Martie who wrote the poem about wanting to write like you? This was just so pretty and perfect, the rhythm, the rhyme, the sentiment the contentment in your words. Wonderfully done Sunshine. |

Now surely you know I am going to be back later with a picture for this, no time now, but I shall return with one, and probably keep this forever, and ever. Live today like it was your last day on earth! |

Excellent poem, Sunshine. A tapestry of words and emotion with powerful imagery to make the mood explode upon the heart. Reminded me of my mother's nervous-heart at my son leaving for the service. ***Ivy Rose |

Nice. My favorite stanza: And with each stitch She says a prayer In hopes her words Are not threadbare “God, save the souls That give their all They’ve gone to war They’ve answered the call Now bring them home Safe, and sound,” And in her stitch Her words are bound Whether on the shoal or on the shore, |
