Perusing Donne

And having read of Donne’s grip
on Death and by his own word ripped
away the stalwart treachery, thereby strip
Death of its awful stench, I stand, tripped
In Memory of those still missed
who would’st stand here, to once again feel sweet kiss
On them in sweet and kinder thought
and deed
I read once more the words Donne brought,
and heed.

Always nice to see someone bring up the classics,
For those that don’t know

John Donne (1572 to 1631 )
One of the Great Metaphysical poets, my favorite is The Flea,

MARK but this flea, and mark in this,
How little that which thou deniest me is ;
It suck'd me first, and now sucks thee,
And in this flea our two bloods mingled be.
Thou know'st that this cannot be said
A sin, nor shame, nor loss of maidenhead ;
Yet this enjoys before it woo,
And pamper'd swells with one blood made of two ;
And this, alas ! is more than we would do.

O stay, three lives in one flea spare,
Where we almost, yea, more than married are.
This flea is you and I, and this
Our marriage bed, and marriage temple is.
Though parents grudge, and you, we're met,
And cloister'd in these living walls of jet.
Though use make you apt to kill me,
Let not to that self-murder added be,
And sacrilege, three sins in killing three.

Cruel and sudden, hast thou since
Purpled thy nail in blood of innocence?
Wherein could this flea guilty be,
Except in that drop which it suck'd from thee?
Yet thou triumph'st, and say'st that thou
Find'st not thyself nor me the weaker now.
'Tis true ; then learn how false fears be ;
Just so much honour, when thou yield'st to me,
Will waste, as this flea's death took life from thee.

This shows the misunderstanding of the thought of the day,
In the thinking that it was blood that intermingled in sex.

The more noted is “For Whom the Bell Tolls”

"No man is an Iland, intire of itselfe; every man is a peece of the Continent, a part of the maine; if a Clod bee washed away by the Sea, Europe is the lesse, as well as if a Promontorie were, as well as if a Manor of thy friends or of thine owne were; any mans death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankinde; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee." (MEDITATION XVII., Devotions upon Emergent Occasions by John Donne)

Hmmm,
Probably more than you wanted to know
He was the subject for my English Paper in College,
I sort of get carried away with this stuff.

Karilea--So inspired by words from long ago..well done!

"We understood
Her by her sight; her pure and eloquent blood
Spoke in her cheeks, and so distinctly wrought
That one might almost say her body thought."

John Donne,
Funeral Elegies. On the Death of Mistress Drury.

Well wasn't that something?  And Gloom, my friend, you say don't have a sense of humor?  You make me about laugh off my chair, YES it was more than I cared to know, but you being the Einstein in this crowd, I bet that felt good to get it out

Karilea, you amaze me - from wisps of the wings of a butterfly to this?  Hmmm, see that is what good poetry is about.  But...I am still sitting here laughing at PF, he's so funny!

indeed, Donne's "Holy Sonnets" should be required reading for anyone who wants to learn more about how to write sonnets. . . at the feet of one of the masters of the form. . .

well done my friend. . .

Beautiful work but I got a wild thought and just had to share it with you
