scars of alcohol

They said I was from the wrong side of town
You could tell by the scars of alcohol around
A pitiful sight, to be honest and frank
The sorriest soul in the county tank.

My name was stained with cheap apple wine
And my mind was worn with the passing of time
One’s eyes you could see I was looking quiet feeble
My speech was slurred, belligerent and evil.

They said “Let’s hear your story son,
Maybe it could have a good end.” I began
to say, there’s just no good to my sorry tale
I fought the Devil and I knew I would fail.

I’d fallen in love with a Canadian Queen
The most beautiful creature you’ve ever seen
For a time we were happy, just roamin’ the town
but ‘ol Alcohol got me, and I let her down.

Soon the Drinking possessed most of my soul
And getting the next bottle was my only goal
now only one thing... is left to do,
get off the ground and get home to you.

A sorry tale indeed, and one I hear far too often. You told it well.

The pursuit of truth and beauty is a sphere of activity in which we are permitted to remain children all our lives.

I have seen this once too often in friends and family and it is heartbreaking for the family and also for the drinker. Very sad and very well written. floria

Thanks everybody

I really wanted it to stay lite but such a topic
is hard to deal with in lite terms. I wrote this
when I was (XXX) back in 1975 I was drinking then
and having what a lot of people call fun.
it's nice though sometimes to pull things out of the attic
and remember where I came from. When I first read it
the other day it struct a funny sort of bell
so I
thought I'd post it. I've lost 3 friends to drinking and drugs.
And also my favorite Uncle to drinking.

thanks again

A Drop in the Bucket

A drop falls in the bucket.
Only one he says,
as he trickles all his promises
out of the trust he built
that took years.

He knew the risk of such a brew,
but it seemed as though this time,
this time one would be enough.

Galvanized and stained,
with a hole in the bottom
to drain out any corruption,
the salve was such a comfort,
for greased and medicated
he cold finally sleep.

But nothing is ever that easy
and the fix that eased him into dreams
also took his self respect.
