Growing Old

Someday, I would love to grow old
indeed, I'd say its my primary goal
my face would fill with wrinkles
but my eyes would smile with twinkles

I might get lumpy, fat and dumpy
and wear those flowered dresses, frumpy
with granny shoes embracing my feet
the golden years would be so sweet

with a grand celebration for each birthday
because growing old is a privilege, they say
I'd let my hair turn silvery white
and embrace each grandchild extra tight

I'd treasure the moments like nuggests of gold
for the sacred honor of growing old

You will Lyra...you will grow old as we all will, and you shall fill Passions blue pages with your beautiful poetry for many many years to come.  Stay positive sweet lady...and if that positive attitude ever should fade remember us here, the friends you have made. We will be here waiting for you Lyra, reading what you have written and saying healing prayers.
~Hugs to you and David, Nancy~

I met a very special woman today
in her 80's   the mischievous twinkle in her eye caught my attention, and spoke vloumes, of her life....I wanted to be her...I wanted to know her more....there wasn't enough time...yes, I want to grow old too....and yeah, you will

Lyra

Where you are puts a whole new slant on it, doesn't it.  This tugged at my heart, dear lady, and made me smile.  Hugs and prayers and positive thoughts to you, from me.

I never thought much about growing old until the day I turned 50. Then, it dawned on me I was halfway there! And I never thought I'd wish wrinkles onto someone else, but I wish you all the happiest of wrinkles. Mazel Tov?

Martin...right now, at this moment...I am deeply optimistic.
I need to stay away from people like that surgeon who told me that my cancer is refractory to almost all treatments....
I think thats the key!
Thanks for your reply

thanks for your reply ((hugs))

Thanks Martie...I see that you understand why I wrote this poem.
My mother, who is almost 87 years old and in remarkably good health, has always said that "its a privilege to get old"
I guess she is very privileged; especially since she was a chain smoker for over 50 years and she ate anything she wanted to and never exercized.
I still can't figure out how she pulled that off.

Kacy...thanks for the Mazel Tov...is that for getting wrinkled?
I actually wouldn't mind getting old and wrinkled.  I haven't gotten too many wrinkles yet, but during the past few months I've gotten plenty of grey hair...oh well, at least I have hair right now...who cares if its a little grey...Grey is one of my favorite haircolors right now.

(big hugggssssssss) Yes, yes, always stay optimistic, sometimes I realize too growing up can be a big step, for I too regret so much I have lost before, but I also know that it wasn't till recently I have learned to believe in myself and my dreams, and if we can only embrace each day with a smile, we will find true happiness always, for we are always young at heart! (kiss on cheek) We all love you so much, sweet friend, never change the person you are, you are a true angel, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Lyra, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

You've made my heart smile with this one, Lyra.  And you're right, attitude is everything!  My mother has a book called, "When I am an Old Woman, I Shall Wear Purple', (I think)...this poem and the pic, reminded me of that book.

Lyra,
I'm so relieved to know you aren't there yet! Not that I'm selfish...but I'm right behind you babe. And the benefits you have described so well.

I have always thought that behind every
wrinkled face,  set of withered hands, all
of the age spots and changes of aging....

There is someone very special,  still young
behind the eyes....such a treasure...

I hope I am viewed that way when.....

But,  I am not there yet...and neither are
you Lyra...

And this is a touching poem...Thank You...

My grandmother and yours are of the same...at 90, my grandmother smoke, enjoyed her drink [never alone] had the "good life" and loved us with great hugs...It was just a few short years ago that a stroke left her as an invalid, but she has the best of care in that she lives with her daughter who will not allow her to go anywhere else to be taken care of...

I just recently sent her some pictures and now she wants "more" for her bulletin board...she has always had "a bad heart" but as you say, I don't know how she pulled it off, and while her heart is not in the best of shape physically, it is still totally whole in love...

I applaud your poem!  I applaud...You!

Lyra, BRAVO !!  this is a wonderful poem. I have never feared growing old and I don't fear it now. We dont keep our looks, everyone wrinkles and greys and becomes wiser with the years. This truly encouraged me to not dread another birthday. Growing old gracefully is a wonderful thing indeed. And I shall continue to meet you Lyra on thes blue pages, as we both grow older. Love to you. floria

The women in my family all live beyond 90...I think it's our dispositions, Lyra and the  fight we have within us. I am glad you have someone to grow old with and I am willing you to get through this most recent struggle.

Madame Chipmunk, this is a beautiful poem. I would like to safe this, if you don't mind. My brother-in-law had cancer. He went to the doctor one day, and it had just disappeared.
I truely hope and pray that this happens to you. I have the best wishes for you. And, I send them all your way. Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Nan...thanks so much for your reply.  I never before realized what a privilege it really is...to get old.
Its more than just a lot of candles on the cake

Duncan..."When I Am An Old Woman, I Shall Wear Purple".  That sounds like my mother in law wrote it.  She always wore everything in purple.  All her clothes, earrings, shoes etc.  She even had a purple suitcase. LOL
  Thanks for your reply.

Larry...thanks for your comments.  I can just picture you wearing one of those frumpy, flowery dresses....as well as those granny shoes

Barry...thanks for your reply.  Neither of us are there yet, but I hope that we both get there.

Karilea...Your grandmother must be an amazing woman!
thanks so much for stopping by and replying to this one.

Lyra, this touched my heart. I pray you get well soon, and prove the idiot doctors wrong,
show them a miracle!
I don't like getting old, but you are so right, when fate tries to take away the chance, it certainly look more appealing. Take care,

M.Munkster:  this is an important write: for both writer and reader.
What it says, and doesn't say, but implies are the sum total of our
worth as people at the end of our journey, when we are forced to
look over our shoulder.  May you be blessed with someone beside you
to share those golden moments with.  ~hug~

Lyra - This is a privilege you shall share in.  I see plenty of wrinkles and 50 pairs of grandma shoes in your closet in the distant future.lol  This poem of yours sure makes growing old seem so nice.  It also reminds us that we should cherish each day no matter what age we are.

Lyra~

I am so late on all my replies, I have taken a few days to reflect life and what it means....I need to do this sometimes, we all do.....I know you will shine bright, and have that twinkle in your eyes, and as much love in your heart, as you have shared among these pages....I keep you in my prayers daily....and wish only peace for you....
