Johnny Blue Johnny limped as he walked the streets of town He wore a Stetson hat; his eyes were big and round A large leather belt was strapped to his waist He walked with purpose, and not in haste His eyes searched the faces of the folks he met He reflected on a day he could never forget The day had dawned, and was gloriously bright That was the day he was drawn into a gunfight He had walked down this very street that day He spoke to people, watched children at play Out of the bank two men came running masks over their faces, pistols gunning He saw a child fall as a bullet strayed The child in a painful, wretched condition laid He was crying for help, but no one came Fear was causing grown men to feel shame Johnny Blue stepped out into the fray He could not allow those men to get away He pulled out his gun, began to fire For others, some courage was acquirred Other men were running from the bank A bullet hit Johnny, to the ground he sank He crawled to where the child lay determined to save that boy’s life that day It seemed the gunfire would never stop The child appeared lifeless as a mop Johnny could see he was still alive He’d have to get him away to survive Little by little He pulled and dragged His body hurt; the useless leg sagged He finally got the child off the street and prayed Doc would be there to meet Others saw the heroic deed of Johnny Blue They came running asking, “What can we do?” Doc was found and brought to the boy Johnny went back to serve as a decoy He pulled a kerchief over his face grabbed a jacket, and then took his place He yelled for the robbers to come his way The decoy lured them to their death that day Finally, the shooting was over and done People looked around, no one had won All the bank robbers lay dead in the street Many people, their Maker, did meet Thanks to Johnny Blue the boy did survive but Johnny, himself, was barely alive He lost his leg, always walked with a crutch In his right hand, he’d lost his sense of touch Johnny put his guns away to never use again From that day forward he’d walk with pain Johnny had watched the boy grow into a man He’d seen the guns in town placed under a ban As he walked, he thought of the town’s progress It had taken years to work through the process The people finally agreed they would choose life They’d put away all the guns and the knife Written by, Wanda 2/12/02 |

You have a gift for telling stories, naturally; our gift is that you do it in poetry... |
