I turned on the local news and they are telling me to make sure I have my survival bag packed. TS Rita hasn't even reached the Gulf of Mexico yet, and Galveston is talking about evacuation. I guess Katrina has put everybody on edge. |

Well, if Rita does explode into a hurricane once it reaches the Gulf and tracks towards Galveston, that'll be the first time since Hurricane Alicia in 1984. These things come in cycles, and I do hope that locals there haven't been lulled into complacency from the time span. I was raised outside of Angleton, and have visited Galveston many times. The massive seawall will serve well, but beach erosion will be massive. Possibly not, come to think of it. There's many sandbars about 100 feet or so off the Texan coast, especially around Freeport, and those will be pushed inland as the waves pound and erode the shore. Not to mention the continental shelf off of Texas extends several hundreds of miles into the Gulf, drastically shallower than the depths off the shelf. Still, won't hurt to be well stocked, and be sure to stockpile water. In a pinch, a freshly scrubbed and decontaminated bathtub works wonders. In fact, I'll be in Angleton by Friday. Fun fun, if Rita heads west. |

On the west end of Galveston they have built so many houses right on the beach. The people there complain every summer how their beach is eroding and keeps asking that money be spent to build it back up. Why they were allowed to build where no protection at all I'll never understand. Well, looks like I will be packed to leave, I live 1 block behind the seawall. Angleton is still too close for a hurricane as far as I'm concerned. |

Well, yeah....about 15 miles from Freeport on 288B. You keep safe there. |

Right now, we're debating, but yet again, we take the wait and see approach... Please stay safe, lovie. Don't hesitate to take to the highway if Rita points her finger at ya. (As it is, I've seen more roadkill in the past two weeks than I have in my whole life.) Sheesh. |

I'm safe in Arkansas. Took a little over 8 hours to drive but I made it. Serenity don't wait too long, cause even if it hit Galveston, Rita looks like one big bad lady who can cover TX & LA. |

I am so glad you made it to safety and hope you stay put until this blows over and then some. Serenity I think will be hunkered down at her camp if there was no manditory evacuation in place, or if it changed, out trying to find a safe place further up north to stay until this is over again! I can not reach her on the phone, so something is up for sure. I just can not believe this is happening again, just can't. Stay safe and hang in there, it has to end soon? |
