Broken pebbles and sharp glass clung to the skin of their feet, as little Nola and Miss Alla, paraded down the street with plastic cup in grasp, and puzzled, stratched small hand to head, to remember just what it was the other one had said "When I was young, and the ground was still whole, we would walk without worry and leave our shoes at home," she spoke, plucking a rock from the ground to throw, she ran her hand across the window of the nearby doll shop, and suddenly it stopped Little Nola sipped hot coffee through a plastic straw, looked up at the blue sky and for once thought she saw something fall, so she rubbed her eyes to see those dark clouds that did haunt all the thoughts and the whispers of the people, still Sleeping to wake up screaming, deep slumber dreaming of floating away, and she'll say to them, "It's nothing, there's nothing to worry about today, maybe tomorrow, maybe never, just watch and wait, and maybe, maybe, may be." They are watching metal streetlamps bend and you are holding shaking lips to hand, to hearts, to chest, to head, little Nola and Miss Alla, wide awake in bed, sighing "this is just a dream," because there is nothing real in a city that can't sleep. |

I think you see more of Nola than I do these days. and who knows? Perhaps raccoon eyes will become trendy--and since seroquel can cause permanent brain damage-- I'll take the circles, thank you. And really thank you, Allysa. I read you and think, with amazement: someone understands Drop me a line, you. |

Very good poem, though I'm sure I would relate more had I ever visited N'Arlins since you do paint a rather compelling description in this and your similiarly inspired works. Which is why I would love to see your collection of pre and post Katrina/Rita bound for those who have been to N'Arlins at one time or another (which includes many many high school seniors and college kids for Mardis Gras) since they would have some relational basis. And I do have a title for you: E Pluribus Unum. Multi word play: Of Many, One; one story of many; and the motto found on US currency. |

I thought of you tonight. I went to this party, and I thought, "Allysa would love this..." Historic Algiers Point, a little corner bar, questionably shabby or chic--pressed tin tiles on the walls, and great acoustics, nice little boogie woogie band--and I cried knowing I can't leave this place... I don't have to go around the world to know there is simply nothing else like it--and you capture her, so forgiving, like a lover's eye. So yeah, I thought of you, and wished you'd been there. (Next time you're in town, hop the ferry--Warren's Corner--the opening scenes of the movie "Ray" were shot there, and you will feel at home, if you are "of the blood." And oh I know you are... Missed you lovie. |

Karen, that sounds like so much fun. Interesting fact, and the boyfriend isn't too keen on this, but I'm graduating in about a year and a half, and I'm looking at Tulane, LSU and University of New Orleans for Graduate school. It's all part of my plan to lure him to the south forever. I was born and raised in Ohio, my entire family is from Ohio, and all I can feel is that when I'm in New Orleans, or Louisiana in general, I want to lay down on the ground and sleep or cry or something. I love everything there. The people, the streets, the shops, everything. The boyfriend's mom, who is from Baton Rogue originally, proposed that we move down there for the summer and work, help rebuild things, etc. So, who knows. Maybe I'll be back soon. (I hope so) <3 |
