Visiting Earth on a Guest Pass

Bluesbird

These trees are never blown, but never still;
bricks block the wind, but in the dark the draft
goes curling upward past my window sill.
Blue shadows flow, each hedge a tethered raft,
the trees pale islands, beaches of street light,
and one lost bird, marooned here for the night.
Pale notes of him come filtering through the leaves,
thrush in blues cadence, singing it so tired,
birdsong in minor keys, as if he grieves
the false dawn, all his singing uninspired.
He is the bluesbird, bliss forced by instinct
turned inward though inexorably linked
to light, yet able somehow to express
through his unwilling music, emptiness.

Ed....You have painted a beautiful watercolor here...it's perfect for this room of Serenity, even though I feel sadness from it. Thank you for this art!

I feel that you know how this bluesbird feels because you are identifying yourself in him. I may be wrong, but from other poems you write, this is what I sense... you are so good at writing feelings, in different ways. sincerely, martyjo

A very sad poem, but one that made me think. I never thought of listening to the songs birds sing to see if it is a happy sound or a "grieving" sound. A very interesting though you have put in my head.

Thanks for bringing this up.
I had missed it.
And now, I am hearing that bird
as he sings a lonesome windswept tune.
