then I stood on a rock
just few feet from the edge
taking life as it came
bravely treading the ledge

now I have lost ground
as the firm floor crumbled
to swallow me inside
and leave me in shambles

here I am sitting drooped
an old king on his bench
to sip drops of old sweat
bound by yesterday’s wrench

speaking to my own ears
in hopes of once again
for none other listens
but my shadow in pain

as this today always
keeps taking me back there
my past bleeds in teardrops
at loss of happy share

Oh, I know this feeling.  I just turned eighteen, and I've been reflecting a lot on my past, on how I used to live, compared to how life is now and promises to be from here on in.    Sometimes it is difficult to grapple with the fact that our past is gone, especially when we keep being taken "back there."

I like how you have written this with the sense of time held directly at the front of the subject matter.  A lot of play on "then" and "now" is a good way to show the importance of the relationship between your past and present.

On a more personal note, I often wonder if looking back is even worth it... if enough of our past still exists in our present, the only thing we have to look back upon are memories and things which no longer exist.  Lessons we've gleaned from our experience will stick with us always; even if times were once happier, we were never more knowledgeable.

Great writing as always, Sudhir.  Glad to see your face in the Sanctuary, and I hope you stick around.

Old king cold.

Loved it, Sudhir. I'm glad you're posting in sanctuary, too.

Hi old friend!

I love this stanza-

as this today always
keeps taking me back there
my past bleeds in teardrops
at loss of happy share

This is such a sad poem, but as LP said, we all look back on our past with some kind of sadness of the things we have left behind. I guess we have to teach ourselves to look head. Very heart felt and well-written!

Most of us go to our grave with our music still inside of us.
