I call the streetcar, "trolley." I dunno why, just always did. It's not a term that spanks of home-- another quirk of me, I guess. I've always been a "city girl"-- I felt the quickening of heart riding on the city bus daddy's hand across the bridge... He took me to the window-- as we passed the riverview-- "Just think!" he said excitedly. "There was a day when you and me would have spent an hour's cross--" and even then I lived the past. * * * This river she has etched a wreck I wonder does he see it now? I traced the mud upon her banks-- watched her waves in reverie. I played among the grasses tall when Autumn blessed the tide-- recede.. once I even tasted it-- so sure was I--I would not bleed-- to death... * * * "We have crossed the Mississippi!" My daddy hugged me--crushing me. I looked into his eyes and wished that forever could be NOW... It might as well been Paris. It should've been the ides of Rome. My little hand in clasp of his-- daddy brought me home... this place that only sees the dawn-- only time I feel the calm watching sun make storms undone-- and watch it happen all again. That's because it IS a 'trolley'. Karen...I am much to tired to come up with a coherent reply that would do justice to this piece. Just know that this touched me deeply, and it brought back memories of me and my daddy when I was a child. Thanks for sharing it. The middle poem, the seed; the beginning and end, the greening shoots? Loved this, Sen. I was asleep when, on my dad's and my road trip to Calif., we crossed the Missouri. Oops... (upon waking, I asked him what it was like "a lot of water," he replied) |

thanks for reading...and thanks MIkEY for noticing the construct of the poem... The Greater New Orleans Bridge is constructed thus...you ride upward...then? there is the middle with a grating there that changes the rhythm of the wheels...just as you cross over the river...then of course, there's the other side. I was just "playing" with word and thought, and didn't really think anyone would get it--grin--should've known better! Thanks you two! |

The way I was brought up? Not to use certain words? However, my mother said that if I were clever, I'd figure out a way... the dam of this just broke! This flies.... |
