The Night Fell Grey
© 2002 C.G. Ward

you, walking away
as the moon spills a pale smile
upon the glistening of my tears.
dark now,
the tide moans your name through
the echo of my loneliness.

but I was never a poet,
I just pretended to rhyme,
if only to keep my fingers
on the nape of your neck,
or to whistle appreciation
that I could never really voice.

so I slide my emotion across
the sand, wishing for a wave
to wash it away. but the water’s calm
and I think I’ll never forget
when the night fell grey.

if i remember rightly (and it's been almost two years, so don't expect me to remember rightly), this was a challenge where someone would toss out a phrase (i know Sharon, bsquirrel, and myself were playing, though can't recall if there were more) and we had to write a poem about it as fast as we could... there was many a poem written that night!

Thanks muted for bringing all my old stinkers up.

I gots to agree wif muted Christopher, this is awesome. I especially like these lines ...

"so I slide my emotion across
the sand, wishing for a wave
to wash it away. but the water’s calm
and I think I’ll never forget
when the night fell grey."

what you do with words, I so envy in poets, and wish I had just a tad of your talent...
and you say this was written in a hurry...wow, amazing!

Marvelous write...

Oh yes you are!

And the atmosphere in this is excellent. Hard to move a poem this cold, but you did it beautifully.

Hey Christopher,

this is inspiring, and reminds me of all the nights spent at the beach (of course my own reasons) but I just wanted to say, I love how you always bring the reader into that moment just that line between word and feel....hugssss you
