I stepped outside last night
To a sky full of stars
Which brought to my eyes
A multitude of pleasure and delight

As I turned to retreat back to the heat
I heard a noise just the ruffling of branches
I saw something that gave me even more delight
Two deer, a mother and a yearling came out to eat

As I quietly watched they came to my fence
Where I always have apples and salt
I knew that something had been eating what I did not know
The doe walked up and ate but the young one was tense

I realized that the doe was the same one from last year
It had what looked like a star in her forehead
I turned to go in when I heard a light snort
It was the doe letting me know that she had no fear

I then thought of my big city friends
With all the bright lights and noisy nights
Wonder if they ever had the pleasure I was having
Of course I knew the answer in the end

Alan, there are advantages to living in the country aren't there? You have shown us what you saw so beautifully.

Wow!  Being a city girl...this makes me want to pack up and move to the county where we have deer roaming freely as well.  Good write.

Wonderful poem Alan. I love to see deer. I don't live out in the country, but I know of a place a few miles away from where I live, where deer often hang out. I drive by there just to see them. They are such gorgeous creatures. Thanks for sharing your poem.

Okay..so I'm gonna giggle first. I'd much rather see one of these beautiful creatures grazing somewhere and peaceful than see them darting out in front of my car on an open highway or dark country road somewhere. SCARY..I've been lucky enough not to run over one yet.

On the other side of this, it would be quiet amazing to just watch them...unfortunately, the part of MS I'm from...nearer to the country, people are more intent on shooting them than watching them.

on ANOTHER side of this. I LOVED this poem, Sir. It was beautifully done.

For all who watch.Dare you say hello? Come in and ask the questions that are on your mind, but spare me your judgement until you truly sipped of me.

This is lovely, and reminds me of my home in Kansas which I long to return to someday.

I am glad I did not miss this one for it made me reminisce and smile...thanks.
