Two Sparrows Two little sparrows came to settle simultaneously In shady grass beneath a lovely blooming dogwood tree The first one asked, ”May I describe the loveliness of thee? The figure of your countenance beneath this dogwood tree?” The second said, “Let me go first, and say what’s in my mind I’ll paint your portrait with my words, then you can render mine” He said, “I see a small brown bird with kind of pinkish beak Some rumpled feathers in the back, and wings with yellow streaks” “That’s you alright, I’ve perfectly described you to a tee! In fact it seems to me, my friend, you look a bit like me” They truly were identical in every single sense As though born of a single egg, within the selfsame nest The first one said, “A see a bird in earthy tones of red Among the grays and black, a rusty cap upon your head And scalloped folded feathers, edged in dogwood blossom white A breast of plush gray pillow down and eyes as black as night” They were in fact twins of the field, their habits quite the same Undistinguished by appearances, both field sparrows by name Until they opened up their beaks, no one would ever know it The only difference ‘twixt the two, the first one was a poet Elizabeth Santos [This message has been edited by Elizabeth Santos (01-07-2002 07:17 PM).] |
