Close Call, In the Woods we were there in the forest the air clear, crisp intermittently, our voices broke the silence, along with distant chain saws our daughter waited and watched from the pick-up cab out of harm’s way? the tow chain girdled the trees in a symbol of infinity one sat upon the blade as I held the saw that man, I’d married, bounced upon the chain the tree moved the blade pulled free shouts rang “Stop, stop, stop!” the tree thudded off to the right of me as I numbly felt the saw handle still in my grip it hadn’t found me nor the metal of the cab this time, we were still safe this time was our last time to gather, together then, in awhile, he went away to stay ©February 9, 2002 Whether on the shoal or on the shore, |
