I guess it's true. A word that finds its way in like company sometimes -- even if stumbling -- may also find a...home.  Please forgive me if I speak too much and too early.  I assure you, I won't be as "vehement" for long...          Ray...

Helpless

You stood there beside me,
drawing a last drag from your cigarette.
Like that we were;
standing so close, and like that so
far.
You said you couldn't sleep...
I wanted to say we ought to go
help people some dark bar;
maybe one less colder than us.
My tongue was dragging over saying...
a couple of beers,
or a shot of liquid cocaine,
might do the trick for you, for us...
A different line than an aching truth
shuttered behind a soulbreak,
silently stoking a whispered flame
in vain.
That's how far i can speak
voiceless...

Tomorrow we'll do the same thing
all over again...probably share
too-short breaks, gravitate towards
each other, blind still; to say
the furthest things from our minds...
I go home each night,
dream words for tomorrow
that i know i'll never say.
And how's that
for breaking down barriers, huh?
But i guess being near you
is close enough --
that it shouldn't matter
after all....

Your work is excellent, this could be titled "hopeless" as well. I am now an avid fan.

such pathos spoken with experience. sigh
But it's so hard to say what we really think.  Each line led to the other in fine poetry, Quietwaters.
Nicely done!
