Winter Wonderland

It falls from the sky, this wintry mix
first snow, then ice with cold pinpricks
the roads are ribbons of polished glaze
the air is filled with crystal haze

all of the schools are closed today
and yet, outside...no children play
the world is a winter wonderland
painted by nature's frigid hand

smoke curls from rooftops bathed in white
but theres nary a single footstep in sight
ice coated trees look like glass figurines
in a pastoral picture postcard scene

tomorrow we'll have to dig ourselves out
the schools will re-open and kids will pout
but today, inside we'll light our fire
and the beauty outside is what we'll admire

Now that's a wonderful way to appreciate the royal dusting you just got from your Mother.
Very well done, Lyra! I had to shovel some snow today too. Now I don't feel so lonesome.

Lyra,
living down under as I do snow is a rarity...so it was nioce to experience it vacariously.

Dear Lyra,
This is a gorgeous picture. I'd hate to have to be out in it, but looking is fine! Loved your word choices.

STUNNING!!!Don't you just love the magical scene it creates...I know it causes roads to be so dangerous but still I can't help but catch my breath in awe when I see the beauty it creates. **big hugs** I love the vision of this poem.

Count me in. You better make room by the fire 'cause I'm on my way. Think I'll hike in to enjoy the beauty on the way. Great wrtie.

Beautiful and discriptive, I could see it in my mind's eye.  My yards are filled with this beautiful miracle.  I will never grow tired of it.

You are right...my mom sure gave me the royal dusting.

Martin...thanks so much, I hope Montreal didn't get hit as badly as we did.

Victoria...thanks so much for your reply, does your son live in the Great Lakes area?

Juanita...thanks, you are so lucky to be having 82 degrees right now...but your time is coming

Keth and Joanna...you are asking for it...both of you are....
I will package up a whole snowstorm and send it to you...and you will be sorry...you will be very sorry!

Nan...thanks for the lovely compliment...Its easy to find beautiful words for snow and ice but not so easy to live with them...especially driving...so I am quite ambivalant about the fluffy white stuff...but I really hate the ice.

Karen...living up in Canada, I imagine that you have your share of this cold beauty.
Thanks so much for your reply.

Larry...if you're going to hike all the way from Arizona to Michigan...then you not only deserve a place by the fire...but some hot buttered rum also.

Shirl...What a delight it is to see you here at Passions.  I am so happy that you are back at your computer again...thanks for the reply, I'll be on the lookout for your beautiful poems.

Floria...thanks for your reply, and I hope you enjoy the beautiful snow...inside

Noah...you probably get lots more of this stuff than we do...but probably not as much ice...thanks for your reply

Lauren...thanks so much for reading and replying to my poem.  The snow is beautiful, but I hate driving in it...I am the little old lady who always slows up all the traffic because I drive so cautiously in it....of course, respecting it's danger...as you said.

Nancy...thanks for replying. I'm glad you finally got your power back.  Thats so annoying to lose it.  We forget how lucky we are to be living at this time.  It always makes me feel helpless when the power goes out...and I wonder what our ancestors ever did without it.

Barry...thanks...this chipmunk is nice and cozy and curled up in front of her computer.
She has been typing for the last 2 days because its too cold to leave her warm burrow.
I have lots of extra blankets if you want to come over.

Ron will probably shoot me, but I would rather have snow in season, then palm trees all year 'round...

or at least, for now!

Enjoyed the poem, but I'm not so sure I enjoy the winter scene though.  I'm from Ontario and we got hit real bad the past few days.  The whole city has been without power for the last 2 days.  Trees and power lines are down, businesses are closed and basically everyone is trapped in their houses because of this stuff.  One good thing came out of it----it taught me how unprepared I was for an emergency.
My daughter and I have been living on sandwiches and ravioli---thank God they have it up and going again.  NO HEAT---man does that ever suck.

I agree with you, totally...Karilea.
I hate driving in the snow, but I like having it around...I think it would be boring to have the same season all year round.
Thanks for your reply.

Lisann, thanks for your reply...We got hit pretty badly also, but were lucky enough to keep our electricity....but, a few years ago we lost it for over a week and when our furnace finally came back on...it came on with a power surge and we had to replace the motor, which meant a couple of more days without heat.....it was obnoxious!
But, in spite of all of that, I would rather live in Michigan than in Florida.
