Dear Samantha,

So Pretty In Pink

Another dreaded moment came to pass and I'm wounded beyond repair
All to familiar was that highway leading home
The only company to console that empty feeling I had
Were the hills that followed and the radio...

I was an invisible passenger on this common path
God, I've never known the silence to be so loud
My heart took on a new level of sadness today
And, lifelessly, I hung my head against the window looking out...

If only I had one more day rested in the back of my mind
And, continual shallow breaths never made it near deep
With blurred vision the tears seemed to overwhelm my eyes
The kind of cry where they never reach the cheeks...

Every now and then I'd find a break in the hills
And, I'd find her face in the middle of my stare
The sun setting left pastels along the evening sky
And, so pretty in pink was my baby there...

Somehow, the hills would part for just a glance
And, I just knew that sunset was meant for me
Nature had a way of telling me she's never really gone
That's when the pink would extend as far as I could see...

Over that highway and the valleys she laid upon
Somehow, her pink left a hint of gold on the pines
And, when the road seemed to climb a little higher out there
It made it so hard when I couldn't touch what's righteously mine...

All at once the hills opened for what seemed a mile
Her presence still within every breath I breathed
And, when that sky changed to a much brighter shade
I knew, I just knew, she was thinking of me...

So, she followed me still and I never turned my head
She was so pretty in pink on that soft blue bed
Together we managed the distance until days end
And, maybe when I travel that highway she'll find me again...
