Treat People Like People he passed many bodies, some with promises that passed by like peace is replaced by war many wanted to win so badly they cheated themselves others just stopped caring about the outcome anymore he saw her dark skin blending with midnight sores fresh, inside and out he saw her son hungry, wounded by fate arrows she weakly lifted her head and muttered a hi He stopped like a derailed train fished a fin with a hooked finger put it back, and withdrew a fifty he scribbled a note on his business card and gave her both "Treat people like people" two weeks later she called him the fifty gave her bus-fare back to her mom and dad they fed and clothed both mom and son an old bestfriend offered her a job she told him about her elderly neighbor without teeth she could not eat she had stopped shopping long ago catch as catch can she always said she sent him a copy of the dentist bill with her promissory signature on the bottom 10 installments of 100 each maybe he imagined it but there looked like tear stains on it She wrote back: Thank you - "Treat people like people" maybe the tear stains on the bill were his own maybe they weren't. (Partially inspired by the book: Pay It Forward by Catherine Ryan Hyde and mostly inspired because…it's just the right thing to do) [This message has been edited by ShadowRider (01-19-2002 10:57 PM).] |

Some very kind random acts of kindness, Shadow...turned into a lovely poem. copyright2002 Lyra Nesius "poetry is life distilled" Gwendolyn Brooks [This message has been edited by Madame Chipmunk (01-19-2002 10:43 PM).] |

This is a wonderful piece of insight as to how people should be treated....and I love practicing random acts of kindness as well. Excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed the read! ~Hugs, Nancy~ ~Time has cast a spell on you, |

Boy this appeals to our higher angels! I wrestle so much with how to help people. There are many whose needs are legitimate. There are so many more that if you were to give them $50.00 they would spend it on the substance that has brought them to their current state. I've not found that balance to know when and how to help. I'm afraid as I get older my cynicism gets the best of me and I then end up not helping at all. A state of affairs that in the end robs me as well. Appreciated this poem and the fine way to present a positive story that comes from an act of kindness. |

This is incredibly moving, with a very wise message in it. Treat people like people…yes, if only everybody would follow that message. If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please? |

From the title I expected to read a nice little piece of fluff and instead I get a powerful, thought-provoking beauty of a poem..VERY nice writing, sir. |

Thanks so much for reading and absorbing the message. I am so glad you praised the message, and not the poet. I would have felt uncomfortable if you had....since the message here is something that we can all do our small part in to make the world a little happier. Sounds cliche', granted, but simple things often do. Thankx again, Y'all!! and don't forget Treat People Like People huuuuuggg |
