named for the river's surging waters halfway between Detroit and Chicago On I-94, trucks carry cargo south of Grand Rapids, north of South Bend the highway, around her outskirts, wends Lake Michigan, just forty miles from here sailing, fishing, volleyball, beer here on the western side of the state the summer sun sets very late in winter months, when trees are stark the schoolbus comes in early dark hills, valleys, picturesque ravines meadows, forests, lakes and streams big Burr Oaks on lonely fields where once, the crops brought farmer's yields entertainment, theatres, symphony a fine college, a big university neighborhoods of friendly folks homes surrounded by Maples and Oaks downtown, at the Institute of Art citizen volunteers do their part a planetarium and a fine museum to view the stars, we love to see um Bronson Park, fests outdoors the Downtown Mall, restaurants and stores a new library with unique looks and stacks of shelves, filled with books a midsize city, filled with pride a Michigan gem, on it's western side copyright2001 Lyra Nesius |

Lyra, what a treat to have such a lovely tour of Kalamazoo. You should send this to town council for city's tourism brochure. Very descriptive. Cheryl |

Madame, I saw Kalamazoo in a different light. I have taken my daughter there to visit friends, but only got off the Interstate and right back on. Maybe I will go back for a look around. Will it really be a beautiful to my eyes? I think so, ME |

I visit Michigan to visit my mom's side of the family every year. I don't remember going to Kalamazoo though. Maybe I'll have to plan a trip there in late May when I am there! I agree with Cheryl, you should send this to the city council for a brocure or something, it would be fantastic! Randy Meador a life lived unexplored is a life not worth living. |

I worked for a patent attorney in Kalamazoo in the early 1980's. There was a GREAT Greek restaurant across the street from where I worked. Kalamazoo always sent the snow to Battle Creek... ah girl, you brought some wonderful memories back with this... |

Thanks for your reply, Sven... I think I wrote a poem about Miami, a while ago. If I can dig it up...I'll post it here. Juanita...thanks for your reply and you know that the feeling is mutual. I love your poetry also. Cheryl...thanks for the suggestion, but I am really not on good terms with our city commission because they don't like environmentalists. Every time they want to use up our open space by building factories or shopping centers that we don't need, I am down at their meetings in city hall, telling them how precious our last bits of open space are....so, I don't think they would publish anything written by me. Noah...this is a really nice city, and it will welcome you with open arms, if you want to visit. copyright2002 Lyra Nesius |

Randy...Wow, thats interesting that your mother's family lives here in Michigan. Kalamazoo would definitely be a nice place to visit while you are here. Mother Earth...Please do have a look at Kalamazoo, it looks much better from the inside than from on the highway. copyright2002 Lyra Nesius |

PDV, Thanks for your reply. Where did you grow up? I was very happy to provide this little tour. Karilea...Thanks for reading and replying. I am very familiar with the Greek restaurant you are talking about; it was called "Dionyses"... I ate many dinners there; unfortunately, it closed in the early nineties. I don't know if you remember a kitchen store on the Kalamazoo Mall called "The Culinary Shoppe", which sold kitchen gadgets, cookware, dishes, and gourmet coffee? I used to own that store. Which patent attorney did you work for? copyright2002 Lyra Nesius "poetry is life distilled" Gwendolyn Brooks [This message has been edited by Madame Chipmunk (01-18-2002 12:09 PM).] |
