TEXAS (it's all big)

When I was so very young
A scruff and a scraggly boy
My own imagination
Was my most enjoy'ble toy

I’d hide in the closet's dark
By cramming myself inside
My time machine would take me
To adventures far and wide

But now that I was older
And a scientist I'd been
I'd searched out for a method
To relive those times again

I built a brand new closet
Titanium for its walls
And then a rocket booster
In case, through time, it stalled

I punched up ancient Rome
And held on for the trip
I sped through cosmic light
With dribble on my lip

I opened up the door
A trucker honked at me
“Beware the Ides of March”
I heard his solemn plea.

I shut the closet door
I’d made inside my lab
Poor Julius Caesar’d
Get shot instead of stabbed

I turned the knob quite madly
The Wild West is where it stopped
So I opened up the doorway
Into a mall with many shops

A cowboy with a temper
I had hoped to not incur
Wearing his boots and Stetson
Silver dollars were his spurs

Said to me “That lady…
You did not tip your hat”
The mall had “Smoking" signs
On one he went and spat!

"You need to learn a lesson
And if I don’t then who’ll
Teach you a little couth
At noon we’ll have a duel"

I could’ve just right then
Turned tail and off I’d run
But all the shops had liquor-
ish in jars. I wanted some

By the new Sanger Harris
And to the left of Dillards
At high noon on the dial
I went to meet the killer

He was propped up by the games
Pack Man and Centipede
With such a nasty sneer
Sev’ral quarters he would feed

I beat him at Dig Dug
Defenbder was a breeze
By time the duel was o'er
I had him on his knees

“Only one could play like you
He was just a little child
Tamed us all at Galaga
In the time the West was wild!”

I left him to his sobs
Back in my time machine
The world was real messed up
From only what I’d seen

I wondered what would happen
If I went back to my youth
Of all the days remembered
Would they still turn out as truth?

I went to where once I'd lived
With a mist upon my eyes
Feeling like a kid again
I became a little shy

I rang the bell just once
And waited for my mom
But in the drive, no car
Was everybody gone?

The lights were all out so
I tried to bring back when…
Sudden flash of mem’ry
Told how I would get in

My bedroom window opened
And my body hit the floor
As I swung myself inside
The throbbing I ignored

I went out to the hall
And saw the closet bare
If all the world gone mad
I knew I'd find it there

I heard a quiet whisper
And the words I used to say
Then a flash of cosmic light
From a kid who loved to play

I ran to my machine
The boy was gone somehow
My mind was very blank
From then, up till just now

Everywhere I travelled
A boy had caused the trouble
Sanger Harris changed its name
He bought stock then it doubled

A man on the moon was sent
By German American States
In Nineteen Sixty-Nine
B.C. at any rate

The wheel, first discovered
The airplane’s maiden flight
Both were given credit
Inventions in one night

I finally caught the boy
In Revolutionary time
When Ike was on the quarter
And ole Abe was on the dime

When I’d drug the boy to light
So my eyes could better see
Well then two and two makes six,
Cuz that boy, you see, was me!

He said he’d just imagined
Himself as the older man
In the bloody Revolution
Where both of us would stand

I did not disappear
Even though I was his thoughts
For I was what he’d come to be
In time and lessons taught

The boy got in his closet
And pulled the phantom knob
Heading for the future
To claim my present job

Time machines are wild, in fact,
No limits are ever set
When boy’s imaginations
Can boost the rocket jets.
