Hiking... On My Knees |

With native plants Stuck in my pants I scrambled down the ridge And raced to the fridge, Low crawling by knee, For rare vegetation to see, Made my throat go so dry For cold beer did I cry, Brewed from a wild native hop, (Local, if you please) To get me back to the top So I can crawl on my knees for my native plants, they always do please. This is a flashback memory of my hiking trips with the California Native Plant Society, Channel Islands Chapter. I miss those knee hikes! |

Thanks for reading, Elizabeth! Yes, hiking with the "natives" is fun, and interesting. A very different approach to hiking than the Sierra club hikes, which sometimes felt like a race for the summit, where many hikers stepped on all those precious little rare native plants in their hurried quest for the magnificent view at the top of the ridge. |

ROTFLMAO, Larry. I guess so. But I was a member of CNPS, and edited the newsletter for a year (The Matilija Copy). We would hike the hills, the coast, the riverbeds and the vallies searching for rare, often endangered plants. Along the way we would enjoy the whole of nature, the flora and the fauna, and the company of other sentient beings. Yes, I am a glutton for this kind of punishment. |

Peaches, yes it is fun and educational, and spiritually invigorating. James, it's true, most everyone had a water bottle. Once I foolishly carried a bota bag of wine instead of water. It didn't last too long, and I was so thirsty by the time the hike was over! Not to mention a little dizzy from all that nature. |

Carolina, nice to meet you! Wherever you live, take time to hike around and enjoy the native vegetation. It's kind of a mini-vacation. |

Lone Wolf, you can howl around here anytime. Yes, I love to hike, just don't have too many chances anymore, and my knees are shot! But I'm still game for more...just make sure you bring a cold beer. |
