Forgotten

In musty box so neatly placed and kept
In ribbon’s golden wrap I soundly slept
Hidden there, forgotten by the host
Unnoticed in the dust by man or ghost

Now someone has discovered and unlocks
The secret contents of the hidden box
Unveiling pages written long ago
Bound carefully with shiny golden bow

A granddaughter’s young curiosity
Allowed the sunlight’s warmth to fall on me
Now worn with age in golden ribbon’s wrap
She places me with care upon her lap

Then opens with a gentle loving hand
The bow tied with a shiny golden band
And tenderly unfolds the weathered page
Now marked by tears and browned by spots of age

I am a lyric verse, a treasured gem
Unveiling love unknown to all of them
For not one soul til now had ever guessed
Her heart with so much love had been possessed

A poetess had lived her life and died
Without disclosing love so long denied
She was a gentle woman, full of grace
Her sonnet now within a girl’s embrace

I am the verse that never was bestowed
To one who lives nearby, just down the road
A sonnet resonating like a bird
A meadow lark left caged and never heard

She folded me into a pocket deep
A place to warmly hold and safely keep
Until the twilight hour when from her heart
A buried treasure she would then impart

She knocked upon the old man’s kitchen door
A friend to whom she often came before
He looked at her in silence, somewhat paled
As though he knew his love had been unveiled

So telling was the face, so young and pure
A friend to whom he opened wide the door
She placed me, folded, gently in his hand
Unclothed of bow and ribbon’s golden band

My song so long unsung would now be heard
He wept and read aloud each precious word
Embracing then the messenger, he said
If not for you, I’d never would have read

This lovely sonnet meant to tell me of
Your grandmother’s hidden lifelong love
She was in truth the only love for me
It seems that love was not our destiny

I know you have your Grandma’s wondrous skill
Of opening your heart with ink and quill
I beg you now don’t ever seek to hide
A lovely sonnet harbored deep inside

No matter what the circumstance or age
Let sunshine fall upon your written page
He held me, his sweet sonnet, to his heart
And said from these dear words, I’ll never part

Elizabeth.

You did not tell me I would need a tissue....

and you have left me utterly speechless....

Please take this one, my dear, and have it published.  Please....

so that your grandchildren will see your gifts, shared....

*sigh* and now that the tears have cleared enough to help me see the screen I can tell you that this poem spoke so much to me. It broke my heart in the reading of it. I hope we can all have the courage it takes to not hide the sonnet of our heart from the one we love. ABSOLUTELY STUNNING. Into my library this one goes. **big hugs**

Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams.

(tears fall down my cheeks) Oh Elizabeth, this is so heartwrenchingly beautiful, this made me flood with tears to feel the sonnet held deeply in her hand splashed with tears and if this love would be true or forgotten. (sad sigh) Sooooooo wonderfully written, sweet friend, your words are always wonderful and exciting to read! We all love you, sweet friend! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Elizabeth, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

I am sitting here crying from reading this wonderful sonnet, Sunshine's words, and wondering where you got this particular inspiration from?  There are so many grandaughters that have found a poet was hidden in the heart of their grandmother, and I too was one of those.  I treasure her tattered old pages that were tied with a ribbon in a box left to me, and no one ever read them.  This sonnet of yours I will hold so close to my heart, and please listen to Sunshine, this has to be shared on a larger scale.  Lady Santos, today I truly dub you with this title in so much respect and am bowing to you.  I think I shall throw out my pen.  Fabulous, just fabulous!

All of the remarks were very warming
