An Old Man's Dance |

[To my daughter Lisa] I would sing an old man's song, and watch a young girl dance - would find pleasure in the song, and pleasure in her dance. I would sing an old man's dreams, and dance to a young girl's song - would find joy in both her dance and my song - find neither wrong. Yes, if I could, if I can, I'll have my cake and will eat it, too - for life is always old, yet forever new - and in each turn, we must find this anew. So I would dance to a young girl's tune, yet sing in my own old voice - for despite the ritual strife, young and old increase each other's life. I'll keep singing my old man's chants, taking joy in the young girl's dance, and while sun shines and moon beams, I'll try to sing of old men's dreams! . .
