Clever drops of a subject's cape
meant a queen would protect her gait;
a gentleman would often taste her food
taking any risks, so she would not brood.

I used to think of where forks and spoons are placed
now on public transport there are no such thing as space
I was a lover of decorum that once graced
our many customs and distinguished our race.

Still I understand the queen has etiquette
when at dinner, plate arrangements are perfect;
she turns to one side only to talk
there are special drinking cups for her wine stock.

There, forks and spoons know their rightful place
there is a sense of decorum and no lost race;
but at subway stations there is push and shove
not a place to expect manners if you're a dove.

Now reason has done away with senseless convention
my needs have taken the air out of useless perfection;
I no longer think of where spoons and forks must stay
don't care what the queen and her court will say.

Martin....this is Miss Manners here.....
whatever has happened to etiquette?
You are absolutely right!
I recently saw someone at a concert, wearing a t-shirt and a tie!
Another great poem!

Martin - I liked your take on the death of etiquette in the world, or well, at least for you.  Hey, I ride the NY subways 5 days a week and I can tell you it is brutal, but I must say, we are so polite to each other.  Actually, just the other day, I layed my overcoat on the ground for a lady to get on the subway.  Well lets just say it got trampled and I never saw my overcoat again.lol  Ahh, NY subways, a haven for proper etiquette.

Hi Mdme Chipmunk,Dave

T-shirt and tie, like miss and match, instead of mix and match, lol..we have papers strewn all over our metro floor, makes me want to pick them up and throw them out!Our subway used to a model..now??
The story of the queen comes from an English language text on etiquette her way..did you know they need someone to change the lightbulbs alone in the palace?[This message has been edited by ecrivan (12-22-2001 01:08 PM).]
