For the Heroes

In the very night of night,
when most everyone’s a-dream,
the hero carries on
fording the stream.

Soldiers, sailors,
air corps, marines
diligently watching,
protecting the scene.

Firefighter, constable,
gendarme, police,
watching, waiting,
protecting the peace.

Whether clouds shroud the sky
or the stars give great light,
the hero protects
all through the night.

When the world’s running out,
the hero runs in
seeking for those
caught in the din

of commotion, of trouble
of frightening deploy
when the villains of life
would seek to destroy.

Where are the heroes;
where are they bound?
Moving forward
bucking the crowd.

Seeing the wanting
doing the deed;
sparring the enemies
filling the need.

The hero has eyes
that see through the tears
risking it all
dispelling your fears.

Hooray for the heroes
hurrah for their care
praise God on high
that each one was there.

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.
