"SIGNS OF AGING" Copyright 2001 by: MARK V SHELDON The years are passing me by faster than a teenage freeway driver. When did they gain momentum? When did I move over to the right-hand lane? I glance at the mirror and see a familiar sign. The distance I've come amazes me as I look around and wonder what the rush is all about. I'd yell out to them to slow down and enjoy the scenery! if they could only hear me... if they would even listen... I'd show them the record time it took me to get this far, but their school of driving taught them that what's behind you doesn't matter, and I'm already in their mirror... a signpost they'll see again, down the road. Love the metaphor! Absolutely spectacular, making the sign think...aloud! Well done! Consider yourself liberated! |

Excellent write, right on. No one wants to look in their rear view mirror. I didn't when I was a teenager either, and much of society seems to be stuck in its early teens. |

"signs of aging" If one can only turn around and no longer be seen through the rear mirror..... And people would look with a kinder eye at their rear mirrors..... A powerful write with a powerful metaphor.... Thank you ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

Wow Mark....being over the one half century mark....I can relate to this well.....seems the years have not slowed down one bit, seem faster now...but I don't move as quickly as I once did....and sometimes I suffer from the I wish syndrome....you know.. I wish I had, could, can, etc... Enjoyed this very much... |

Wow! I must have hit a resonant chord with this one... Hi Sunshine! Thank you so much for your warm rays of praise -- it's been overcast here for a while... Liberated? Yes and no... you've always got to watch out for those "highway patrols"... Hi Kacy: ...and they're not even enjoying themselves, either! Thank you for your thoughts. My Melody: maybe one just needs to look past one's own reflection and take note of the other details around them? Unless one's a vampire, I'm not sure about the missing reflection, though... Thank you, my lady for your observations. Hi there, JM! It's nice to sneak in here, as time permits. I'm glad you appreciated the content -- I tried to give the poem a "circular" kind-of-feel -- almost a Twilight Zone element with the cycle repeating itself from generation to generation... Thank you for reading -- it's nice to see your name too! Magnus: seems like you can relate then. I know what you mean regarding the "speed up syndrome..." I noticed that a while back -- remember how summer vacations would last forever when we were in grade school? Now we find ourselves asking, "what IS vacation?" You've got to be careful, though: regret is one hell of a pothole to pop your tires in... but curiosity is inevitable. Indeed: what if? Thank you, Sir, for your detailed thoughts and for your read -- they are very much appreciated. Hey Nancy! I'm glad you found some "joy" in this one... Thanks for the read & reply. Hi Titia! It's a nice feeling to have written something to which one responds so favorably. Thank you very much. Hey there, Logan! Your gentle analogy has made me smile wide. Look at it this way: at least your still on the freeway, eh? Thank you, Sir, for your reply. Hi Sandra. Home is relative, though... keep the fire in your heart warm, and your home will always be welcoming. Thanks, Pal, for the read. -MVS "If you don't ask: you don't get." -Steve Miller |

I understand, I'm ready to get out and walk (quite leisurely) the rest of the way. Enjoyed "Happy people have no history" - French Proverb |

< What a beautifully insightful line and what a wonderful concept for a poem. I love it. I am hoping to pull over and watch the traffic for a while, myself. No one ever listened themselves into trouble. [This message has been edited by The Lonely Stranger (edited 11-14-2001).] |

I think that's a very good idea, Richard. Sometimes we forget that walking can be very rewarding both pysically and spiritually. Thank your for your time. T.L.S.: thanks for relating. It's amazing how much passes us by when we don't think to notice. Glad you enjoyed. -MVS "If you don't ask: you don't get." -Steve Miller |

A really great write Mark! I imagine..I've been careless at times..but I've now learned the power of slowing down and enjoying the scenery..the drive..the song on the radio..the person riding my bumper! The milemarkers mean more now than ever. Sincerely, Regina It's all in the mind |

Thank you, Regina. It really is all about the details, for the big picture always takes care of itself. As for that person riding your bumper... perhaps a license plate frame on your back plate, which reads: "I MAY BE SLOW BUT I'M AHEAD OF YOU" would serve them as inspiration...? Thanks for the read and comments, as always. -MVS "If you don't ask: you don't get." -Steve Miller |
