How Many Shades Of Green

The bell jangled and jingled incessantly
In the street, car horns beeped impatiently
She reached into her designer purse
hoping some holiday cheer to disburse

A dollar bill came out in her hand
as she gave it to the Salvation man
The thousands that she held back
would not be spent on those that lack

She did her errands spent all her cash
except the hundred in her secret stash
The liquor store was the last on her list
supplies for the party wanted to miss

Quarts of Vodka, bottles of wine
so much booze, so little time
Ninety eight dollars was the total bill
she sought her cache for the man at the till

She lay the bill upon the clerk’s hand
but he looked at her with silent demand
There in his palm was a dollar bill
suddenly, she felt quite ill

Somewhere that night, the Salvation man
prayed in thanks for what was in his can
So many only gave their change he knew
One hundred dollars! It was too good to be true!

How many shades of green can erase
the look of sadness on a child’s face
Whether dollar or ten or twenty you spare
every little bit helps and shows that you care.

Poet deVine,
LOL What sweet justice. Generous inspite of herself. Gotta love it. Wonderful story. Happy Holidays!

The past is history and the future is a mystery, but today is a gift and that is why it is the present!

This year for so many of us have a lot less to give. We all dug deep for the September 11th tragedy and 250 people in my company were told that as of Jan. 15, they are out of a job.

But this year, as we did last year, our department 'adopted' a family. It's not a big strain on one person and it's amazing what we've been able to pull together (whew! I never knew little boy's clothes were so expensive! LOL). So I think every dime we give - given in love - is something to be proud of.

Thank you for reading!

Poet deVine,

The true spirit of Christmas you've written with care,
As a reminder to us all lest we forget
The rich and the poor with others should share.
Thank you; may God bless you dear Poet!

I absolutely LOVE this!!  It reminds me much of my own poem, "Children Weep".  We often spend money so foolishly when if used as the tool that it is could do so much more to bring happiness into the lives of others.  MOST excellent work!!
