mirror waltz

Now, as the frame fell
and the silvered thing
has slipped out
and lays scattered all about
needles and fine teeth,
dagger, scalpel, and scythe,
and all at odd angles,
and the dance is not yet done,

I see not one
but many reflections of me.
One
two
three.

Mirror, mirror, tell
how this one piece will not reflect
though it has glass and silver
and a back.  And it is old.
I would suspect
it is not there
were it not so cold.

One
two
three,
step and toe
as mirrors dance
and dancers go.

And mirror,
what is this two score
past thing
standing
watching friends and sibling scorn
who laugh
to watch the show?
Oh no, it was not so.

One
two
three
step and see
which one, which one
is me.

And mirror,
who are these two strangers here
standing by the way
many, many days ago,
the ones who, holding you,
watched you fall?
No, no, it was not that way at all.

One
two
three
step and see
around around we go
all the lovely shining things
that glitter so.

And mirror,
what is this half of two score me
betraying love before it's born
drunken, stupid lechery, high,
groveling in the filth
of hateful memory?
Not I.

And mirror,
what is this one score ere,
the one who,
not having found all the parts of you,
not knowing what to say or do,
will lie?
I was not there.

One
two
three
step and toe
and balance
and end.

I search through all that is,
each one possessing razor's edge
unseen but by the awkward glance
of mirrors in a mirror dance.

There is only one that does not hurt,
though I have danced the day away
in loathed familiarity
of lovers, friends, and family,
the fading image said,

The one not dead.
