Purple Rose What is it in the power of a phrase Inciting pen to skim across the white To pour out words in unpredicted ways Their inky blackness dancing in delight What joy could have been captured in my eye And filtered to my heart in such a way That eager fingertips would soon comply And gather words to verse the heart’s display Today I’ve savored sweetness of the earth The deepest violet of amethyst A tiny rose perhaps of little worth Was glowing through the dawning’s purple mist And thus a sonnet wrapped in velvet glow So sweet a rose, I wanted you to know Elizabeth Santos |
