My World Has always been round Can't imagine, that just because I traveled Out of someone's retrospect That I fell Off somewhere along The shallowness of their horizon Amazing how on the West Coast I was more hillbilly than Maw & Paw Kettling up some vittles for some Dude in the valley, the boulevard. Now I'm home...and suddenly Everyone around me says "Where You From?" In question of my accent peculiar "I'm from here" I respond Always to some eye jerk Like I grew something Sticking out of my head I find it so hilarious A bit sarcastic even To play along So I tell them that I Was a biogenic governmental Experiment, as a child To see how well People would accept A mutated strain of hillbilly Once removed from its origin And transplanted into A habitually educated society Whereupon maturity I was then Returned to my birthplace To see if I even retained Any former indigenous beginnings And that I have a law suit Against the government For stressing my mental & emotional state As to the fact that I no longer Understood my original tongue And that they no longer understood me! But for me to take the matter To the Supreme Court It would have to be so drastic Of a hardship, or “crime” For the pending suit to even be considered From that, My lawyer had advised me In my case, that I’d have to kill Someone first in order to gain Media attention and favor in my plight Proving homicidal insanity would be tricky Since I hadn’t been pressed to kill anyone Over it...... yet. They suddenly agree with my plight With many well wishes Or tell me that I have a wonderful accent. I may have lost my accent But not my sense of humor. But most don’t realize how bio-degrading They can be in their unacceptance [This message has been edited by rwood (edited 10-30-2001).] |

Regina, I love this. I've alwasy been an 'accent junkie', meaning I love to hear all kinds of accents, like listening to tongued rainbows. When I lived in Texas, and Florida, people said I spoke like a Californian', and when I lived in Europe/Middle East, they said I was definitely 'California". When I moved back to California, they asked me where I was from. Go figure. Meanwhile, I try to blend at least 10 differerent accents into one, giving me a "world citizen" accent. On the internet, no one cares, or notices. ![]() |

I too have always enjoyed accents and have become fair at pinpointing one's origins. Personally, being the son of an English teacher and from western Pennsylvania it would be difficult to guess mine. I don't say yu'uns or mum for mom. Today I had a dye in the wool N'orleans customer and one could hasten to say they were from New England if you jump too early. Only fine distinctions seperate Iowa from Ohio. California is very difficult. Alabama stands out and a good Virginia accent will make anyone smile. In the advent of an extremely mobile society and good 'ol television with it's cookie cutter talking heads it becomes a blander world and one day, sadly we will all sound the same. You Canadians however are a breeze. [This message has been edited by RSWells (edited 10-30-2001).] |

Interesting that you mention this accent thing...lots of things are different depending on what part of the country you live in...I mentioned to a friend that I was born in Kentucky and she said let go visit Kentucky and I told her I didn't think I would fit in there anymore after living so many years in California and Hawaii and Japan and Germany and France...it's just not the same any more...James |

Regina you have NO idea, I had the same thing, going from New Hampshire(very strong accent here) to California for a long time, back to New Hampshire. Though luckily I lived in California a few years as a child, so never got the full on New Englander sound. I was always an outsider..still am. I love your government experiment explanation. Too perfect. Sandra |

Funny! I much enjoyed this. I too had to lose an accent (urban New Jersey), and now find myself a stranger in a well-known land. Glenn Logan |

Larry: Shore Nuf Brother! Balladeer: Just a chittlin and grinning! What fun! Long as we can have a spittin contest afterwards! K! ![]() Nancy: Mighty kind of you my dear Lady. So glad you came in and joined our little accent hoe down! ![]() Midnitesun: I love accents too! I tell people I have a Southern accent with a hint of beach bunny and a dash of Hollywood and a touch of FloriBama sauce. Throw in a little Mid-western breeze and ya got me. Richard: You are so right! What fun would it be if we were all monotone or sounded the same. I find it is intriguing to say the least. I even love the way some people say my name! The lilt in their voice or the way they roll the R sometimes! Love it! James: I know. So much changes. But change is good sometimes. I couldn't forget my roots..but my roots run past the state line now...and a whole lot deeper. Rick: Love It! G'day to you! I even love the word mate. It much more personable! So glad you enjoyed. Glad to hear from down under! Thank you! Sandra: I might get to hear some of that next month. Going to Niagra Falls. Should run into plenty milling about from all over. I bet they all think I am from SC or somewhere deep south...But the Tennesseeans think I'm from up North Ha! Michael: Hey You! Speaking of Deep South, deeper than I am anyways. So glad you enjoyed! Thanx bunches! Glen: It's strange isn't it..I'm sort of like Latino. Like Ricky on I Love Lucy...I speak this normal language till I'm excited or mad...then the drawl and southern bite starts rolling out. I laugh at myself! Thanks so much for sharing. Jwesley: Thank you so much. It's always more fun when you add another to the pot! Appreciate you dearly! Sven: That's cause you're a darn good listener! Hugs! ![]() Sue: Another lovely accent! Just gotta love those Aussies! So glad you stopped in! Except yours is much more interesting! ![]() Interloper: No ole...just gass! I drive one them there mini-vans, My azz is green! I drink azz tea, don't sit on my azz cept when I type on this here puter thang, and I darn near dance on the bawer.... shore will, won't rush off neither! ![]() ![]() Shoot Far Sincerely, Regina |
