A Halloween Story Poem...

Once upon a midnight weary......

Or was it dreary?

The full moon shone brightly over the distant graveyard, aptly called Potter’s Field.
Countless headstones of named and unknown souls departed from life, forgotten.
A distant Owl hoo hooing a sad cry, causing the nape of my neck to feel odd.
Walking along a darkened highway, two miles back to town.  No gas.

My luck...certainly not good this night.  Halloween, and here I am, creepy.
Only the lights of a distant farm house giving life to otherwise total darkness.
Childhood fears surfacing beneath my otherwise calm exterior, I walk on.
A sudden chill invades me, causing me to bundle tighter, walk faster.

Shattering the quiet of the evening, a distant dog barks and howls in answer to the moon’s call.
The sound of a train going away, rounding a bend prior to the first grade to climb.
Kicking rocks, I walk on.  The silence creating screams of panic in my mind.
What if there really were ghouls and goblins?  What if Halloween were real?

Lights behind me of a car...Perhaps relief is in sight.  Get me out of here.
I stand aside as the lights approach, slowing to a stop mere paces away.
Staring into the glare, I cannot see the driver.  Surely they are going my way.
I take a step toward the car and stop suddenly.  Why did it back up as I approached?
Taking another step, same reaction from the car.  Now I am worried, is this a joke?

To hell with this.  I don’t need a ride anyway.  I turn and walk on.
Something tells me I am being followed.  The car, mere paces away, slowly keeping pace.
My steps quicken, now beginning to run.  Running on, labored breaths, frantic.
Still, in spite of my intentions, lights follow me.  My shadows running, faster I flee.

Another pair of lights.  These from the opposite direction.  Help maybe?
Slowing in front of me, rolling to a stop.  Blue lights illuminate me.  Safety at last.
What am I doing?  Where am I going?  What am I doing out here?
I can’t explain.....Why?   The other car....it isn’t there.  Just as though it never was.
Happy Halloween....

Oh Nancy....just a mild little tidbit of
mystery before the moon rises full.  The
ground starting to rise in a nearby graveyard.  The howl of a dog breaking the
thickness of a soup like fog covering the
ground......go snuggle up,  leave a light
on....Trick or Treat....
