She glides gracefully, silently
through still waters
cloaked in her finest
ebony and ivory cape,
her ruby red eyes cannot disguise
her hope of finding her soulmate.
Hiding in anticipation
she deftly guides her lover's heart
to where she waits patiently
behind whispering reeds,
and then watches in sheer ecstasy
as he dances and trills,
flipping love notes in perfect harmony,
a rhapsody of love so true
it captures her heart, forevermore.
And when death does make one of this pair depart,
the mate cries alone, and from others stays apart,
never to search for another's heart.
For that is the way of the loon,
and the story behind that mournful tune
you can sometimes hear in the mist of night.

Hauntingly romantic...I could see and hear it happening.

Benita, thanks for reading. This is probably my third or fourth loon song poem, but not the last. Glad you enjoyed it.

Dunkin, good morning...or afternoon maybe.
Yes, it is a haunting melody. I've met very few humans who share this once-in-a-lifetime belief about true love. Does that make us the lesser species, or perhaps just the one with the strongest survival instinct? Something I always ponder, these things called love and mating.

Now I know, thank you
I've been called a loon before
or was that loony

Beautiful piece.  I loved it!

Fool, said my Muse to me, look in thy heart and write.

(sigh) Oh Kathleen, this is so so sad but also so beautifully romantic! (sigh) Loons are always faithful to their loves hearts and we too should always be like they are, to love and to comfort forever till death do us part. (big hugggsssssss) I LOVE IT KACY!!! (kiss on cheek) Muah! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Kathleen, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

You are so kind. Yes, loons mate for life. If you ever want to learn more about them, go to a site called Loon Multimedia. Believe it or not, the creator of the site is a California biologist named Darwin. Yes, it's true. And he knows more about loons than anyone else I can think of . Sorry, I don't have the link url. I'll look for it, as it is an awesome site!
