Spelunk! Spelunk! Spelunk!

Falling drops of lime,
moments in time.

The twilight zone beckons
you to enter within
the crystal chasm below,
where spelunkers dangle
from friendly threads
and crawl on their knees
'round majestic columns
massive as giant Sequoia trees,
and shiny soda straws are
swallowed by Mother Earth's
cavernous mouth,
while Aeolian chamber music curls
capriciously through deep canyons
and painted galleries.

An opus of Nature.

The sounds of a saxaphone suddenly echoing
point to counterpoint,
blending harmonically, sensuously,
dancing lovers entwined
beneath surface sinkholes that
camouflage hidden treasures,
young vertical shafts
cutting through moist passages
of calcite speleothems,
a whirlwind melody of
enveloping stalagmite reeds,
notes dropping serendipitously
from crystalline stalctites.

Spelunk! spelunk! spelunk!

Bridging the ethereal tunes of nature
surrealistically with sensual sax sounds,
a jazz fusion with licks of lime,
mingled with Aeolian chamber music sublime,
Beckoning you to enter these
chambers divine.

Note:The opening of a cave is affectionately called the twilight zone by spelunkers, whose first love is exploring the secrets of caves. It is not a reference to Rod Serling's old Twilight Zone show.

Sunshine, thanks. Glad it brought back some  crystal clear memories.

Startime, have you ever been in a crystal cave? They are awesome. Even claustrophobics should see at least one cave in their lifetime.

I happen to have a special fondness for spelunkerers (sp???) This was charming and I didn't know that bit about the twilight zone, so I thank you for adding to my knowledge on the subject too!

I doubt I will ever be able to experience a cave first hand, but poems like these help me to discover the beauty so often heard of caves in my own special way. Thanks.

Serenity, I was hoping you would read this, as I thought you might know some "cavies" as I privately call them. Glad you enjoyed this, and it might just be the first in a mini-series. More on that later, as I may need another poet to assist....

Enchantress, glad you enjoyed this, and hope you have had the chance for a crystal cave expedition, if not, it's worth whatever it takes.

Dawn, glad you learned a little and enjoyed. It's an experience of a lifetime, and I'm hoping to get to do it again someday soon.
And I don't like enclosed spaces or tunnels, not even elevators.

Midnitesun,
If I had known you were at Carlsbad this summer I'd have looked for you!  Nice job.  And thanks for teaching me to do this...

Thanks for reading, Larry. Hope I can get back to Carlsbad next year. My daughter has never been in the caves, and I haven't been there in 20 years.
And your're welcome dude.

I'm fascinated by caves... but stymied by claustrophobia. *G* Carlsbad and Lehman fascinate me enough (and are large enough) to keep the panic at bay... but I thought entrance to a small robber's cave this summer was going to be the exit of my breath and sanity. *S*

Thanks for painting pictures I can enjoy without the being confined... I enjoyed! *S*

A robber's cave? Sounds interesting. Where is this cave? But I'm with you, a tiny opening into the earth is spooky. I've passed several opportunities to explore mini-caves because of a touch of claustrophobia.
Maybe it's best to enjoy them vicariously.
