When I was just a little girl,
Too little to see we were poor,
It didn't really matter much
And it still doesn't matter anymore.
'Cuz my mother was the queen.

We didn't own a TV, not even a black and white,
and the fridge wasn't even a fridge but
an old 'ice box', empty some days and nights.
But we always went to school with a lunch,
mom was set in her ways in that.
The milkman kept bringing milk to the door.
He didn't care mom was too poor to pay,
he just kept bringing a fresh bottle every day.
My big sister Loretta heard about this TV game
called 'Queen For a Day.' She wanted mom to play.
She wrote them a letter, they sent two tickets,
and she and mom went to the show the next day.

Well, Mom won the crown but at home we didn't know
'till the neighbors ran over to excitedly say
"Your mom is the Queen today."
I laughed and said, "Yep, and my daddy is the King"
But of course daddy had long since gone away.
Imagine my surprise when the cab pulled in,
and the Queen Mother stepped out carrying fresh roses and a grin.
Yes, my Mother was the Queen , if only for a day.

This is a true story. SMILING. (FYI, late 50's show)

I recall watching that program and once I made my mother a crown to wear because I thought she was the prettiest queen I knew.

Kacy,

This is so sweet and I loved every word.  Being one of thirteen, I was also poor as a child, so I can easily relate to this.  Thanks!

Thank you for sharing this fabulous story. It was such a great inspiration to the beginning of my day. Your Mom was so deserving to be the Queen I'm certain. You seemed to have a castle of love even still.

Sincerely,
Regina

Loved that show and love your poem.  But I thought my mom was the queen.  Are we really that old?

This is so touching. What wonderful memories you have. I don't know the show, but I can just picture it.

If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please?

LOL, Larry. SHHH. I'm trying really hard to ignore the wrinkles that I see and the grey hairs screaming at me in the mirror. Yes, time is catching up with us, but we still have so many more stories left to write. My favorite line is from Hootie and the Blowfish, "I don't believe in time"

PS. I'll bet your mom was also the queen (smiling)

OK, Tracey. You probably weren't even in diapers when my mom was the queen. It was a strange show,  where several ladies would "compete" with their sad stories, and the audience would vote for the Queen. I used to be quite uneasy about this true story, but not anymore. The older I get, the more I enjoy thinking about those days of seeming innocence. Thanks for reading.

I remember this show, and if your Mom won - she deserved it, and earned it.  I envy you your memories and hope to read of more of them.  This was a precious poem and I hope you share it with the family.  I loved it!

Duncan, thanks for reading. Your aunt was a queen? How many queens can this world have, anyway. LOL, Larry C says his mom was queen.

Mysteria, thanks. I haven't shown this to any family members yet, but maybe it should be part my holiday card. It will receive mixed reviews. But that is another story, one that will probably never be printed.

This brought back so many memories... and not just of being dirt poor. *S*

My mother was a queen once... just not on the show. *S* We were supposed to go to my grandmother's to help shell peas... when my aunt called to see if we were ready to be picked up, my mother snootily replied "Of course... just have the crown and purple carpet waiting, the queen will grace you with her prescence." *G*

We didn't think anything of it when my aunt showed up in hot pink and said that was the closest she had to royal purple... until we arrived at my grandmother's and my cousins were all lined up to fan my mother with "palm" leaves (they'd actually raided the chinaberry tree! LOL) and my grandmother draped a lavender quilt around my mother. They put a cooking pot on her head for a crown and gave her a broom as her sceptre... and we were all laughing so hard it was hours before we could settle down to work. *G*

I enjoyed your poem and the trip down memory lane. *S*

Suthern, LOL at your pea-shellin Queen mother story. Write it up poetically and post it separately, it's hilarious!

Interloper, thanks! And you've done it again with your shorts..er your short poems I mean.

Smartchick, thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed this royal tale.

Magnus, I'm sure your mother will always be Queen for you, for a lifetime, not just a day.

Spitfire, thank you so much. I am happy when you read and enjoy something I wrote.
