Strawberry Beret By: Noah Eaton 10/13/01 When the first man and woman met Living happily for many star-studded years There came a time when they began to quarrel Until the day the wife ran away east into the frontier Her husband begged her to come back, but she strided further Leaving the man lonely in his grief Watching her raven black hair brush against the east Nundagunyi sun Beginning to fall behind the prairie Then the glum husband felt a warm hand caress his back It was Unelanunhi, the Apportioner, who controlled the sun He asked him if he was still angry about his wife And he said, "No, I love her with all my heart, she is the one!" Begging to have her back, the great Unelanunhi rose to the sky Growing huckleberry patches in front of the woman he missed But she went on, ignoring them, and the sun raised a crop of blackberries Still not driven by their temptation, she went on to resist Unelanunhi tried again and again, still not stopping her Until finally, he grew a field of lush ruby strawberries Curious in the beauty of this fruit, she kneeled down and picked some Tasting the sweetness of them, she turned her head to the west coterie She thought of the romantic times she had with her husband Sitting down to think it over, the desire of coming back to him increased Finally making up her mind, she picked up her dress and held it like a basket Scooping as many berries as she could, and running back home to him merrily And she kissed him on the lips, and he forgave her for what went wrong She too said she was sorry, and they placed the strawberries in a wicker case As Unelanunhi slowly sank behind the valley, peeking with a smile Wishing this married couple good luck and to be happy the rest of their days...
