Children of Our World There's a little boy in Yonkers And a little girl in Queens. They see that we are grieving And they know just what it means. There are other children scattered, In our nation and abroad, And some of them are kneeling, To send tearful prayers to God. For some have lost a parent, Or a brother; sister dear. An auntie or an uncle, Though it isn't very clear, Just how so many people On a fine September day, Could say good-bye and leave them And then disappear that way. When grown-ups are fighting To re-gain some normalcy, How hard it is for children, So bereft by what they see. They know their lives are changing And they struggle with the pain Of slowly realizing They won't see their folks again. Now we may call them heroes And it makes us very sad, But in the realm of children, They were just called Mom or Dad! Our future lies within their hands. I hope someday they'll see, We did the very best we could To keep our country free! Betty Lou Hebert [This message has been edited by Trillium (edited 09-21-2001).] |

But in the realm of children, They were just called Mom or Dad! Boy, how true is that!!!!! You say so much in this poem, Betty...and you say it well. ![]() |

It is all so sad. Yet we still have so much to be thankful for. My heart goes out to the children. |

Oh, BettyLou~ This is sooooooo tender and touching~ Thank you for sharing it with us. I watched the Oprah Winfrey show this afternoon~ Each family story brought a new rush of tears. *Hugs* ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ |

Songbird: Yes, the children who have lost people they love have also lost their childhood I'm afraid. Betty Lou Hebert |

Marge: Thank you so much! I know what you mean. I haven't been able to stop crying either, though not as often. There are so many heart-wrenching stories emerging. Betty Lou Hebert |
