Through twisted metal and rubble They scoured for human life The magnitude of this tragedy Had cut their hearts like a knife Their own workmates were among the dead Yet they continued on with their task Where on earth did they find their strength? So many of us would surely ask So brave and so courageous A job they had to do Such wonderful human beings Guardian angels to me and you They never gave up hope As exhaustion soon set in Those responsible for such a callous act Had committed such a mortal sin But humanity will prevail As we all join hands and pray And remember all the lives we lost On that unforgettable September day Suetang |

I cannot imagine the toll it must take on the psyche to keep going into Ground Zero, as it is now euphemistically called, hour after hour, day after day, week after week, to try to recover the remains of the lives lost in those towers. My heart breaks every time I see those rescue workers, police, firefighters and friends go down into the bowels of the Earth. Thanks, Sue, for sharing this tribute and remembrance poem.
