Granmama said, "be happy child
for who you are inside.
Too many walk upon this earth
so sad, unsatisfied.
Always lookin' to be somethin'
theys simply cannot be.
wishing for the moon & stars,
when theys the earth & sea."

She gently clasped my hand in hers
& smiled a tender smile.
"peoples rushin' here & there
to live a life of style.
Theys never taken time to see
the beauty of today
workin' hard to live a dream
in futures far away.
Today ain't promised to a soul
so make it special child
love yourself, be good to others
and prosper all the while
Do what peoples just ignore
going from day to day
cultivates a beautiful heart
you've been taught the way
Leaves hatred, jealousy, & envy behind
replace it with joy and love
If peoples be tryin' to push it on you
prays for'em to God above
The good book says to return no evil
to those done evil to you
bless them instead & go your way
be thankful your heart is true."

Granmama was wise beyond her years
& tho I'd gone astray
her words remained within my heart
& I'm living them today
I miss her more than one could know
I miss her gentle smile
the kindness deep within her eyes
how she said, "set a while"
still, I honor her memory
each night before I go to bed
I tell my babies everything
my granmama always said...

As I grow older, I sometimes hear my mother's voice come from my throat, but am thrilled when I hear my grandmother's words....

Thank you, Lady In White, Captain, VAS, & Sven, for your comments. As always, they are deeply appreciated. My Granmother was well ahead of her time in that she raised a family, divorced, then became a working woman and lived alone happily for the rest of her life. She encouraged me to be independent to always be able to take care of myself. She was articulate, modern, & business like, for as long as I'd known her. She was tall, with hair flowing to her shoulders, and strolled like a model up until the day she became seriously ill. She would have gotten a kick out of my poem, perhaps wondering whom it was about! *chuckles* I'd wanted my poem to have the flavor of times long ago, before she was born. She was my role model. I miss her with all of my heart.

RT... you had shared a story or two with me long ago about your grandmother... the stories and the courage she had always impressed me and she was a person I always thought I would have liked to meet...
you did her proud I think with this one...

This is such a loving reminder of the people who have touched our lives ... yours, mine and others~

I think each of us hold a special place for the things that a unique person left us ... knowing full-well we'd recall them when we needed most to remember.

Got those same memories of my great grandmother~
Oh, what lessons of life she left with me.

Wonderfully done, this segment of memories.
