"Even God cannot change the past"
             - AGATHON c.420 b.c.

Tearing through the comforting cotton swaddle
I raced towards the madras designs,
then through pointy shoed, Ban Lon, black leather,
dawdling for a spell in tie dye,
before finding myself in the noose of a power tie.

I rose from ritualistic latin knees,
strolling past calmer steeples of similar bent,
refusing the 2% milk of nondenomination
and shunned the mosque, synagogue and temples
of those who so obviously birth prejudice.
Druidlike I'm afoot outdoors.

Flatlined newspapers became voice,
radio became sight,
black and white burst into color.
Now individual's hands reach through
the screen and simultaneously demand
a momentary firefly of their own.

We ran to the suburbs and turned
our backs on the slums, a festering void
in whose primordial mix grew the
exotic beats of starving artists.
Then kicked a trendy wedge disguised
as a doorstop, a funnel through which
poured lofted condos and toney townhouses,
forcing the poor to fertilize another spot.

I wrinkle in every episode,
a gray hair for every failing,
a mole for each moment when
I knew a short squirt of joy.

The clock strikes four in the tower
over this quietest of libraries.

I'm jealous of whoever was allowed
to dwell long enough behind the fresh
college student to apply her tattoo.
I'm jealous of her future.

Fate, Time, Occaision, Chance, and Change?
To these all things are subject but eternal Love.
                -Shelley

Oh my, this is such a powerful piece. I was going to pick out some lines that particularly rang out, but there were so many. What a great read

I like the way you describe things, and I know what you are saying here. "I'm jealous of her future." That holds some serious impact, even with all the more exotic words.

Well as the old saying goes ...
"youre dating yourself with this"
poetic perfect is the impact of that last verse.
well done poet sir......
your topic reminded me of an old fave song...

"Now for you and me it made not be that hard to reach our dreams
But that magic feeling never seems to last
And while the future's there for anyone to change
Still you know it's seems
It would be easier sometimes to change the past"

A woman who lies for a man, is a woman who lies to herself.

This is so neat,
you may be jealous of
the life ahead of her
but don't forget the one
that you are living now
is worth every second!
