when I say "I love you"
that is all I mean
there are no qualifiers
no extra words to describe
the kind of love
that I have for you
you are in my heart
and because you are
in my heart
I love you

when I say "I love you"
there are no hidden words
no lines to read between
only the words exist
three words, eight letters
millions of feelings
but yet, only one feeling
the feeling that I
have for you

when I say "I love you"
that is all I know
I love you as you are
as you will be
at your best, at your worst

this is all that I mean
when I say
"I love you"

lot of love going on here today!

ok, enough of that, Sven, in reading this I notice you encourage critique, God I love poetry!

may I?

this is what I would do with this if I were writing it...ok, hey, you offered right?

ha ha

just for your ponderings:

lost some of the wordiness, prepositional phrasing and added a metaphor of arithmetic...God, I need something else to do today!

When I say "I love you"

no definitions needed to describe
the love
I have for you
you’re in my heart
and because you are
I love you

when I say "I love you"
in-between lines dissolve
words divide
three words, eight letters
feelings multiply
but yet, only one feeling
sums up what I
have for you

when I say "I love you"
it’s all I know!
I love you as you are
as you will be
at your best, your worst

this is what I mean
when I say
"I love you"

In a way, this is very much what I was attempting to say, in an earlier poem.  Though from the receiving end.  And sometimes, I think it really is this simple.  It's when we meddle with the simplicity that love can lose it's purity.

And that is enough, I swear it has to be. Because what else is there?
Very good poem, pointed out many things.

Sometimes, that's all you need to say, I love you speaks a thousand words!~

thank you all my friends for your wonderful words and your thoughts. . . too often, I've found, we want to know what someone means when they say "I love you". . . why?? Can't we just love someone?  Why analyze it??  Why not just be happy and content that we're loved. . . and that someone loves us???

Duncan, I really hadn't thought about your poem until just now that you pointed it out. . . yes, it does seem that we were speaking of the same thing. . .

Irish Rose, thank you for your suggestions. . . it's always nice to have another opinion. . .

Those three words are enough. We can put conditiond and demands in but then is that truely love?

Throw your heart out in front of you
And run out to catch it.

To dream, perchance to be loved in the very same manor you've so poetically expressed.
True love is unconditional... Sometimes hard to achieve but when it is authentic there is nothing that comes close to it.
I enjoyed   your talented way of letting us know what is in your heart. Bravo!   Love and peace ((~.~))

thanks to all that have replied. . .

I was thinking the other day about these three words. . . and just how much is attached to them. . . and wondering, why do we have to "attach" so much to them?  can't we just tell someone that we love them without all of the extra words and other things that seem to get in the way and make us wonder about why we're told that?

If I tell you "I love you". . . shouldn't that be enough??

Thank you all again my friends. . .

Well Sven, I have a lot to mention on this theme.  Personally I get sick of "I love you" after a little while.  There are so many other ways to say it than just using those three words, they are becoming almost cliche aren't they?
This poem of yours is an example - instead of saying "I love you" you actually go into detail on it.  I happen to think that analyzing it is important in establishing that it isn't just a general statement.
There are a lot of people whom I love, and all in such very different ways.  Each person I love, I love in their own unique way, as they are all individuals.  So why would I tell them all "I love you" if it means something so different for each one?
I make it a point every day to tell someone "I love you" in more words than three.  To set them apart and make them really feel truly unique, that I find has the greatest expressive effect.
We are poets after all, aren't we?
Thanks for the topic, Sven.  And a wonderful poem, which goes without saying.

thank you my friends for your wonderful words and insights. . .

Allan, you bring up some good points. . . but. . . if you already have told that person how you love them. . . then, just saying "I love you" says it all doesn't it???     Perhaps that's one for Philosophy or Feelings my friend. . .
