state of confusion

Fighting Fire

From the vantage point
of second story windows,
we watch smoke
rising in twin gray spirals
against a cirrus cloud backdrop,
one to the north of us,
the other to the south,
expanding with each elapsing day,
feeding on forests and bone dry grasslands.

I take my wallet and keys
to bed with me at night,
teach the children
how quickly one must move
in a fire,
to crawl along the hallway
to the end of the house,
but lately,
they prefer to sleep
in my room,
on the floor near the bed,
closer to security,
within mama’s reach
and near the escape route
door.

In the news,
eleven fires are counted on the state map,
with many more blazing across the northwest,
we listen to warnings -
not enough trained people left
to fight the flames.
Without them,
people will lose homes,
parklands will lose trees and wildlife,
but also,
firefighters will lose their
lives
saving ours.

Having done that before makes your words come very alive, as they usually do, Cor. I know the helpless feeling of fire not stopping..stay safe..very gentle smile

Thank you for your heart-felt concerns, Eric, Marge, Cindi and Nan.

It's a little cooler here today, and rain will come to parts of the northwest, but they aren't predicting that it will reach this part of California.

Again, thank you.

Corinne
