Postpartum Pilgrimage The house awakened in those pre-dawn hours when at her breast engorged its tiny tsar, demanding to fulfill his avaricious will, or shrill at ursurpation of his powers. These were the best of busy times, by far; his primal need which she alone could fill became nutrition for her own self-worth and fueled fantasies that magnified while contemplating what he'd grow to be. Perhaps a farmer who would work the earth, to weed, to watch his sowing multiplied, with winding rows, as far as eyes would see; an architect of noble monuments, his sphinx outlasting man's millennia; a lawyer, teacher, doctor who would serve without his monetary recompense consuming life, a schizophrenia, giving warring owning; a prince with nerve enough to love those governed more than life his fame or wealth; an honest judge, or priest devoted to both God and woeful man. Her choice? That in this life he'd love one wife, the multiplier of his seed at least tenfold, and he be hero to their clan. --jess burstyn Enter the Oscar Poetry Contest |
