For Marge Tindal My mother took material and she tore A strip to make a tear dress that I wore, Commemorating women on the trail, Who had no knives or scissors to avail Construction of a shirt or gown to wear, Made from whatever cloth that they had there And once this type of dress was utilized, The People kept this method. Realized, The clothing people made and proudly wore, Was tribute to all those who'd gone before. The garments may be finer now than then, But bring the memories of those times again. Lest all of us forget what they went through, I'm sharing this small part, today, with you. Betty Lou Hebert On The Trail of Tears, the women were not allwed to have any knives or scissors, so they tore material and constructed clothing to wear. Just one of the many deprivations they suffered. [This message has been edited by Trillium (edited 05-29-2001).] |

I really enjoyed this. It would have made a nice addition to my daughter's 8th grade History lessons this year. An excellent poem to read on Memorial Day. Thanks, "Midnitesun" Kacy |

I am "too" familiar with the Trail of Tears, and thank you for recalling an event that took too many lives, and far too many spirits. Excellent write. ~*~ Thanks Marge for sending this to me ~*~ |

Thank you for recounting one more story of depravation endured along the trail. "I am not now that which I have been." |

Sweet, Sweet BettyLou~ This is just the nicest offering of a tradition that was left to me by my Great Grandmother. I have printed your lovely poem out to place with a very fragile photograph I have of my Great Grandmother in the Tear Dress she made. Such a lovely gift you've given me and I thank you so much for it. The more we know - the more we know. The sistership of the spirit encircles you close to my heart. Love n' hugs~ ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ |

Thanks so much for taking this opportunity to once again expose the tremendous injustices that the founders of America heaped on the original residents of this land. This indeed is amoung the most touching of poems that I've read in a long long time!! |

Dear Marge: You are so welcome! I'm just glad it pleases you and it means a great deal to think it will be placed beside a picture of your grandmother in her tear dress. I feel honored! Thank you for your expressions of kinship and love. Betty Lou Hebert |
