High Land Losses, Four

it is good
here
on this high land
even when we come in sorrow
we look around
and our spirits’ souls come
to find peace in the
vision of the valleys

as we only bury our
losses
in the spring, summer or fall
and keep those
that passed
through the winter
in the old soddies

until we can bring them,
come spring
to the high land

we keep the graves well tended

it is hardest to make the
markers for
the youngest,
but the elders, they have
lived good, strong lives,
and they died, knowing
we would carry on

they all came forward
and looked forward
and never once,
except perhaps in daydreams
looked back

never speaking of what once was
but what
could be
would be
and will be, come

                        ~*~

we clear the land and
tend to the mowing of
the early grasses,
each spring, on
this high land

but I note, now, this year
as my eyes cannot find
the migration in the low lands
of the buffalo

I shall note that this spring,
1878, no buffalo were seen in the valley

perhaps my record of this
will remain

perhaps no one will care

but one noticed

                        ~*~

and it is glad I am,
to have heard there is no more
distinction between the black
and the white of us
now two years gone

it would be nice if there were
no more distinction between
that which runs red
and is moved away
my heart still bleeds for them
even though red and white and
black blood ran

mingling together into the
earth
when will God help change the
hearts?
when will all men learn?

                        ~*~

we shall quit High Land for a while now
until we are carried here again
by carrying, again,
to either bury,
or remember
and our caring will show
and be heard
in the psalms
and the flowers
and the markers

I will be glad when my time comes
I think my spirit will rest easy here,
on this hill
this high land

and perhaps it will someday
be called
Highland Cemetery

You know what is strange....this is probably considered "an orphan" of a write....

and it is probably one of the series that means the most to me....

thank you ALL for your reading!
