Death of a Poet I lay awakened from a dream Confused of what was real or seemed The midnight moon cast opal light Across the silent walls of night An arrow beam come down and kissed. A drape of moon in silver mist Layed on my eyes this mask to blind realities in dreamer’s mind Then slumber turned to introspect And grasped what truth it could detect A moment’s pause to ponder through The place I lay, the world I knew If this be just a fantasy Then come, sweet moon to comfort me For sadness fills this empty night Where you have cast a somber light I looked in mirror’s edge of glass To visions that had come to pass And there, a poet’s aging face Reflected through the years of space My God!, he seemed to weep the tears From swollen eyes in younger years What soul is this that looks at me And speaks of love in poetry Awake! this mad and youthful rage For hands are worn and dried with age But still he speaks and still I know The words of passion he’ll bestow He wrote from out the mirror's face With honesty and gentle grace He gazes out with eyes of youth And writes alluring words of truth Who am I now, the young or old? Who’s trembling not from pain or cold But from a verse of poetry That reaches to the soul of me But wait!, these tears in silver beams Are not for fantasies or dreams These are the tears meant for tonight To now be shed in moon’s sweet light Tis not a dream, I know full well I’ve slept the night on sheets of hell And waken now in hour of dread Oh, silver moon, --- the poet’s dead He died, but lives in poetry His spitit running deep and free A loved one closed the eyes of age But lives, oh moon, on silver page Let opalecsent beams of light Engrave his words in dark of night And etch in stars the poet name For heaven’s face is not the same And God will bless this cherished friend And stars will hold his poet pen Wilfred Yeats, dear poet, dear friend Liz |

This was by far the most touching of tributes. "Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to decieve" |

What I felt in Wilfred's poetry was a youthful passion for life, and he expressed it unlike any other poet I've read. It then became contagious to the reader, who felt a part of the poetry. This is what I was trying to express here, "who am I now, the young or old?'. Wilfred was young at heart, but mature in wisdom and his perspective on love and life. I love his poetry. I'll be looking to the stars Thank you Liz |
