I am in search of
the Top Quark.

What is a quark, you say?

A quark is the smallest particle
in the universe...
the building block of
everything.

Scientists surmised there were
six different quarks..
in thirteen years they found five.
It would take another twenty years
to find the sixth....or "top" quark.
It was found by hurling
protons and anti-protons
at each other at nearly
the speed of light.....
having it appear once in one billion collisions
and lasting less than one billionth of a second.

Yet, this tiny particle
Has created everything
in the universe.
Everything
has its roots traced back
to the quark.
Religious views may say...NO!
Everything was created by GOD!

Perhaps we are both right...

What does God look like?
A burning bush?
A streak of lightning?
How about the one billionth
of a second brilliance
from the one thing that is
the creator of every known
thing in the universe?

Who can say?

I am in search of
the "top" quark.
I will look one billion times
if necessary.
Should I be successful,
in that one billionth
of a second of visibility
I will thank it

or Him

for you.

'Deer dear heart

I love this, truly utterly terrific. The wonder of the top quark, I don't know about a flash of brilliance of a quark, but this is a beacon of brilliance on a page. Illuming and sparking interest, wonderful work, brilliant writing. I really do love this.

Take care

A quark you say, and "top", no less,
Now let me get this right …
A quark (from proton), "antis"-up
Colliding … oh so bright!

Such wonderful instructive verse from you today Michael!  Your flow in free verse is as lovely as your flow in rhyme. I very much enjoyed this, and am very thankful to "it" or "him" for you too!

Best wishes,
/Kit

aw...geez...this went somewhere so unexpected...very sweet, and I liked the visuals of creation there. I never found argument between science and creationism--I pretty much see it the way you described. Nice!

I guess the last part of this poem would explain that there would have to be an outside force act on the quark to make it accomplish all that a theory in the subjunctive mood claims.....One can have all the parts to build an automobile but if those parts aren't put together by an outside force then they just continue to lay there.

Thought provoking poem!

Thank you for my science lesson today. The only problem I can see is us humans are never satisfied with the ending. When they find the "Top Quark" someone will say, "I don't believe it I'm going to keep looking."

Seek, and ye shall find. *S* Okay, so it's never worked for me with love, but obviously, you're much luckier in that aspect! LOL

Yanno... it simply isn't fair that you write rhyme beyond compare AND excellent free verse... you're being downright greedy! LOL. Seriously... this is great, Deer One!
