These Gifts From The Fountain This poem is a tribute to Passions and was posted as my 500th post here. I am reposting because I have observed that many have taken advantage of the wonderful openess of the Passions format. I see people posting several poems at a time and driving others down the board and off into obscurity. I see poets posting their own work without ever extending the courtesy of replying to the exceptional heart worthy completeness established by others who toil from the depth of the integrity of their very soul. A moderator may wish to remove this from open as it's a discussion subject and I will understand. However, at present I hope that some will read this with an unselfish open mind! Poetry was never meant to be a competition! It's a way to speak, and listen, to a contemporary community of readers and writers. Writing is important to the auhor as it's her/his form of deep internal expression and creativness. But it's equally crucial to observe the language of fellow writers, how it was fashioned and refashioned by these our poet peers. Most of us need to be remimded from time to time that although we continue to write we also need to continue to read widely, and to support an art which offers profound rewards, though they're rarely material. We need more poets, not fewer, as some critics of creative writing programs would have it. As the Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy said, " to add your light to the sum of light. Do it with patience, and love, and respect for the depth and difficulty of the task." These gifts from the fountain are all that I need when the road gets so lonely and the future seems bleak. Somehow I still turn the path I can find through the mist and the suffering comes the peace I define. Through the world's great distractions back stabbers and liars I've pressed on through all things and I battled the fires. Somehow I still learn and truth I can find and the cloud covered mountains become easy to climb. Now the road to perfection is roughed up and long and some of the rights things are suddenly gone. But if there's words of true wisdom from hearts that are blessed between the earth and the heavens this poetry board rests. The role of poetry is to utter the un-utterable; to open up |

Geez, I'm new here but rather than witness strife at a poetic website maybe there should be rules. I come in peace. "Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to decieve" |

This is a wonderful poem and an excellent commentary. Don't exclude prose either - I post in there once in awhile and see the 'post and run' attitude of the members there. I say, at least READ first and then post! |

So thank you for saying it and expressing it so well......... ![]() **************************** It's only me.......only me I hope that would suffice eternally {{to cross a sea of wonder, and hold close at heart all dreams}} [This message has been edited by MyEnchanted_Melody (edited 06-28-2001).] |

(smiling) An age old issue with all boards I have seen... sometimes many more posts than comments..some poets of talent ignored simply because they are in a different style or place, or are new... I have not found that the being new is an issue here as much as the people commenting..are as I have seen in the past usually the same ones over and over. Nothing wrong with that, it just points out that there is always room for new people to comment and for us to comment on more people... Good thoughts and you are quite right, poetry is not a competition...it is a window into the lives and hearts of others as well as a way for us to learn... Bravo! For posting... |

Janet I knew you'd be able to relate to this and the connection that all of us have new or old through the vehicle of poetry. I thank you! Cpat Hair I appreciate the fact that you understand the purpose behind this post! |

Beautifully and respectfully stated Ethome ... indeed, if it were a competition, the pleasure would be quickly diminished. I get such a thrill out of reading so many words on these pages ... it's like taking a trip and never leaving my home. True, there is pleasure in the writing, but what a joy to read the world through so many other poet's eyes. Thank you Eric. ![]() Best wishes, /Kit |

I must confess Bravery's not my style So your title halted me For a while Then I checked my Substantial girth And decided I have guts For what it's worth! *G* But dern it... you weren't offering a diet plan (one that requires NO sacrifices, please... and all exercise must be of the exceedingly pleasant romantic variety... see, I don't ask for much? LOL) Seriously... you've addressed an issue that bothers a lot of us... and done so with class and dignity (and a terrific poem! *G*) so I applaud you... well done! |

RIGHT YOU AREI replied to this subject in other forums in the same way. Passions should never turn into a postcountcompetion and every one should at least have the courtesy to reply to others. Great Prose and Poetry and I don't think it should be removed from this place, your words are far to important. Titia A rose is a rose is a rose...I guess... |

Kit I feel the same way...It's an education to read the styles and ideas of others through poetry! Thanks! dgvarner I sure appreciate the fact that you are busy and I appreciate the fact that you do reply when you can! Suthern...sorry no diet plan.....just a poetry diet. Thank you so very much for your comments Charisma I appreciate the fact that you comment and enjoy the work of others just as I enjoy your work and I thank you! James I agree it's nice to be noticed and I thank you for noticing me among others from time to time! I thank you for reading Balladeer. I'll have to change the title next time so it won't keep you away for six hours. I only used that title so I could get the audience that I thought would need to read this. Titia thanks for the hearty reply and I couldn't agree more this is not a post count competition. You said that very well! The role of poetry is to utter the un-utterable; to open up |

ethome - I read what you have written here and totally agreed with you. This had to be in your heart to write such words. Thank you for sharing this with me and everyone on Passions. True are the words that you speak. BC |
